Battery (lead acid) vent pipe - Replacement needed?

Hi folks,
Following on from this thread; http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=312330

And Ian's time observation about the fact the new batter should have an acid vent pipe incase of boil over or bike tipping over.

The questions is.. where should this run on the bike? And does anyone know where you get the tubing?

I have asked a local garage and they are getting back to me, about it.

New wet batteries all come with a new pipe.

Vent it wherever you want. Just bare in mind that any fluid seepage is very corrosive.

Alas, Steptoe, the new shiny varta came with an elbow but no pipe!

the supplier is looking into it for me. So hopefully if it was supposed to have one, they can get one for me.

On my 1100, the battery vent pipe runs with the fuel tank breather and filler neck drain to down under the right hand footrest. I've left in it in place just in case I ever decide to fit a wet battery. However this would only ever happen in some sort of emergency - I mean why would you?...

I thought it might. And having had a closer look at the cluster of pipes it might still be there. As there is a thin pipe, amoungst the bundle.

I am wondering if they just tucked it out the way somewhere at the top, maybe under the cradle. But that means taking the battery out again to have a good look.

As for why fit a wet battery.. simply time and price.. I needed a new battery and the gel/cel was more! Never had any issues with the BMW wet battery it had when I bought it. It died after 6-7 years of service. So hopefully this new varta will give me the same.

As Steptoe said - wherever you run the vent, make sure you do it right. A while ago, I read about a guy on ADV who had no end of trouble when his wet battery leaked and corroded one of the earth junctions in the wiring loom underneath the battery box. He spent weeks and virtually tore his bike to pieces to find the fault...

I am glad to say, having got the bike out of the garage and into some sunlight, where I could see things better. I was able to trace back the vent pipe from the cluters of vent/beather pipes, behind the right footpeg, back up over the top of the engine and locate where blue bell had tucked it out of the way, out of sight when they put the gel cel in.

So now the vent is re-connected.

I don't plan to be off roading the GS any time soon, if I did get back to taking off road then I would be looking to fit a gel/cel again. For now it plain old roads for her.
