Advice please...

I went to get the bike out last week, switched on the ignition, the LCD was working but only got a high speed whirring noise when I pressed the starter button. A quick look on here suggests the battery is buggered so I ordered a new OE battery and accompanying charger. I've now installed the new battery exactly as per the old one and connected the charger via the under seat accessory socket but I keep getting an error message on the charger after about a minute.

The bike is an 07 GS. It has an Autocom wired into the under seat accessory socket and heated jacket wired direct to the battery. Les' HiD main and spots are wired behind the beak.

I've connected the charger to the accessory socket, plugged it in and then switched the ignition on and off. The charger power light is on and the 0 light comes on but after approx a minute the 0 light goes out and the Error light comes on. I've tried the old battery and still get the same result.

Any idea what the problem is?

Thanks in advance.

I think you'll find that the accessory socket is on a delay timer ( approx 1 minute ?) which disconnects it after the ignition is switched off .... Saves flattening the battery if accessories are left on.

Could be wrong, they'll correct me if so...

Several things spring to mind. If your charger is not OEM, i.e Optimate, you will need to hook it up direct to the battery which you can buy a lead for or modify your accessory socket to be direct off the battery. The canbus shuts down after a while so the OEM accessory socket won't work with a third party charger.

Did you check the battery with a meter before replacing it? A high speed whirring noise could be generated if the starter motor isn't engaging properly and might not have anything to do with the battery or alternator.

Looking further into this I think it's something to do with the Autocom being spliced into the accessory socket - there's mention previously of this tricking the charger into thinking there's a fault and therefore causing an error. I might be way off the mark though...

Probably not what you want to hear but:
1) sell the BMW charger
2) buy an optimate
3) hard wire an optimate waterproof flying lead to the battery with it poking out from under your seat
4) plug in optimate
5) relax

That's what I did.... :thumb
