starter button / kill switch?
Mart, the more you describe your symptoms - especially the stuck bendix gear - the more parallels with my woes from a couple of months back. As you know, a new starter cured all my issues.
Instead of buying a starter, if you have the time try taking it to a local auto electrician and see if they can rebuild it. They will say no on the phone but take it in bits so they can see the guts and that it is just a normal starter and not some motorcycle magic and they will probably at least have a look. It should only be a few days if they can get the parts.

edit, forgot to add on mine the pinion gear was stuck in the "engaged" position. I am not sure if when the engine started it got spun out the way but it took a lot of leverage to free it off. If stuck then it cant be good for the starter.
useful video here ....https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-RzcsdFoRQ

I think you need to sort out the cutting out first. A faulty starter is unlikely to cause the engine to cut out, whereas faulty electrics would cause the engine to die and not restart. Check every connection, especially on the engine as it sounds like it happens when it warms up after a few miles but is OK cold. Clean any fuses. You mentioned a potentially dodgy battery connection, check the other end as well, they could all be in the same condition.
Heat could affect the coils causing it to cut out, but they wouldn't affect the starter, so unlikely, same with the injection.
You need to sort out the cause, not the effect (the starter not working is an effect of another fault).
Yes that would fit the symptom of the intermittant starting
I cant get into the solenoid, so cant tell whats going on in there
