Now that it's getting colder here in Scotland I am using the heated grips more regularly.
But I get the red triangle and battery warning light if I have the grips on for 40 minutes or more. With full beam on as well then it takes a lot less than that!

If I switch them off then the warning lights switch off soon afterwards suggesting a charging problem or something similar.

I've contacted the dealer about this but just want to see if anyone else has experienced this and what then happened.

Tempted to make a joke and say "you should have opted for the LED light!".

But seriously! That's not right , something certainly faulty on your bike. The alternator should power everything successfully and a 5A heated jacket.

I ran mine with heated grips and heated jacket with no problem at all.
Definitely something wrong there.

Hmmm, unless I am missing the joke, I do have the LED light!!

It's certainly better than the ones on my previous GSes, but it's still not amazing. Especially on right handers!

Ah well the very low draw of an LED (main or dipped) adds to the suspicion that a dealer needs to investigate your fault.
Perhaps you could let us know what the outcome is ?

how old is it? 13 plate maybe 14? suspect faulty alternator maybe, hope you have warrenty

Get in touch with BMW. My battery was flat when I came to it one morning, they sent a truck, took it away & replaced the battery.
I run mine with LEDs on, 2 Givi 55W halogen lights, Nav V & heated grips and the voltage stays above 14V

There is definitely something wrong. I have had my LC GSA for more than 2 years and have many times run all day with heated grips on full, spotlights on and headlamp on normal dipped. Never bothered to look at the voltage as never had a problem.

Oh oh.... sounds like alternator on the way out... I think it's engine out to fix... smells like £2k plus. I hope warranty is still on...

Maybe it is the battery actually... it better be...

Well it went into the dealer last week. They charged up the battery for 24 hours, ran diagnostic tests and updated the software. No faults came up.

I thought that it was OK after the ride home and Monday's commute, but the problem remains now. Especially when the main beam is on (or full) and I put the heated grips on.

I understand that the dealer are referring this to BMW to see if they can work out what's wrong.

So it'll be back to the dealer soon as it's definitely too cold for riding without heated grips now. Will keep you posted.
