Battle of the Somme Anniversary Trip

Yes, plus it stinks of fumes...

Eh? What fumes? Electric engine, and no engines running...better than the ferry where the trucks start engines to get air up 20 minutes before they need to.

Never found any problem in the tunnel..certainly boring but only takes 40 minutes, which is enough time to reset zumo to km and CET.

-plus 1 for the tunnel no issue at all, sooner be stood for half an hour, than spend 20 minutes in what is a cargo hold being gassed to death.

These are all within easy reach of Ypres :thumb

Ive never done the tunnel. I'm guessing it's quicker but is it as boring as it looks?

The tunnel is ace if you live down there. Take the Hull boat there and back, you'll be home an hour after getting off the boat and you can spend an hour or two in Bruges on the way to the ferry. If you come back via Dover or Folkestone you'll be seriously pissed off by the time you get home.

Well worth a visit - if not for the German aspects of the war (look at the reception hall ceiling and walls as you go in) then for the double VC winner Albert Ball who is buried in Langemarck. He was given a full military honors burial by the Germans - the back story on Albert Ball is very interesting.

We're going past Arras next Friday on our way to the Vosges mountains for a week.

We are stopping at the Canadian Memorial and to take a look around the trenches t will also
check out some of the local places mentioned here if we have time.

It may already have been mentioned but nearby there is a small cemetery set in a bomb crater.

As has been said before the Cloth hall is well worth a visit and the Last Post at the Menin Gate is very moving.

Dont forget the Peglers Steve, I think it was Martin at orchard farm he does tours around somme and that on a bike.

I was going in July but ive opted for Normandy first on the 29th June.. going to do a 3 weeker next year on me todd all the way across... difficulty is that there is so much to see and do.....

have a good one

dont forget your feckin helmet stickers!!!

He 'only' won one VC and he's buried in the German part of the Annoeullin Cemetery :thumb

That Is a great RR for the area :thumby:

Lots in the area as mentioned in the other posts the crator is huge to think it was almost filled in until rescued by an Englishman, Vimmy Ridge is so big, mother Canada looking down on the Unknown Soldier, on the way in looking into the woods the landscape still looks unnatural . Thiepval is an unusual memorial, I have recently learned that my great uncle Albert is remembered in the stone there. Must return soon, a hop on the train 35 mins is a doddle.

Enjoy yr trip Bear :beerjug:

They were my first choice for accommodation, but they were booked up. Maybe I ought to see if he's free to act as a guide? But I'm guessing he's either booked up or taking part in the centenary anniversary?
