BBC1 Countryfile - Vehicular Access and the TRF

But for those that can't be arsed to watch. It starts off with the usual load of bollox, 4x4's tearing up the landscape, bikes racing at breakneck speeds, a totally biased report. 5 mins of the report against, only 1 min with a positive for trail riding.

At least the TRF got to have their say, for all of 1 min. :augie

The whole report gave the public a dim view of trail riding I thought.

What the Rambliars don't realise, is that the more ROW are closed, the more it encourages illegal riding. :blast

After all, if you had a bike worth somewhere between 2 or 4 grand, would you stop riding it 'cos some greedy selfish toads said "Oh not here sunshine".

Sensationalist rubbish what more do you expect from the BBC?

It's shit like this that makes me want to buy another trail bike

Anyone got a CRM for sale?

Totally agree Roy. I just watched it and felt it just portrayed us in a bad light and we are all tarred with the same brush. I’ve only been doing this for app 5 years but I’ve never been out with a group where half the riders/bikes are illegal.

Ive just watched it and although it didnt paint the prettiest picture of our sport I thought It could have been a lot worse. Like what`s been said before, at least the TRF managed to say their piece and I think he did quite well.
You lot all members of the TRF then?:)

And of course if you totally banned trail riding you would still have all the illegal riding.
I thought it was a reasonably balanced view myself.
I'm an ex TRF member but let in lapse when we lived in France and need to rejoin now we're back in blighty.

Must admit the ariel shots of the 4x4 convoy didn't do the cause any good.

I cringed when I heard it was going to be on
I also cringed last time I went over Houndskirk moor on me bike thinkin to meself
Hope the ramblers dont think I did that damage to the lovely moor (off the trail)

They did say, and maybe should have shouted,
IT'S A SMALL MINORITY THAT SPOILS IT FOR THE REST
I dont think it will be all that long before Derbyshire is a no-go area = 5 year max

I did find it quite interesting that the chap who was for banning all vehicles from the lanes was quite happy to be interviewed whilst driving his defender along one of said lanes!!

I was a bit dissapointed in it tbh, I thought there would be more to offer than they actually showed/filmed.

Are you sure? It looked like a plain old road to me :augie

Pretty sure it was the lane that runs from the A515 near Hartington to Middleton by Youlgreave, granted the head on shot was on the tarmaced SE end but some of the in car shots were definitely on the unsurfaced section.

the im ok but the rest of you oicks can stay away:mmmm

Thanks for highlighting it JB - interesting. Shame there wasn't a greater differentiation between the shots of the 4x4s chewing up the private land (with permission) and those using the public rights of way, as I can see why the uninformed could form the view that that is what we do, wherever we ride.

I thought the TRF wallah was good and balanced in his view. He rightly wasn't confrontational with the Alliance rep thus should have gained some support through his mutual condemnation of illegal activity.

I also lead some mountain activity and know some rambler sorts. As we all know, it will be the fools that ruin it for the rest of us. The risk is that it will be their notoriety that forms public opinion against us.

Question is - how do you overcome it?

Answers on a postcard (ok, a large one) to your local TRF rep!

Perhaps EVERYBODY in the TRF (and GLASS etc) should join the Ramblers assoc. Then they can vote in one of their own blokes to the chairman post. They can also outvote all the anti "Greenlaners".

Just a thought.

Ps. Why are horses not blamed for churning up lanes? They have METAL SHOES for gods sake. A lane close to me is used by the local riding stables, and it's ALWAYS a churned up mess. NO VEHICLES use this lane.

The solution is quite simple actually. We now have a system of additional vehicles. Something like:

Public Footpath
Bridleway = Public Footpath + Horses + Bicycles
Byway = Bridleway + Motorised vehicles.

If they'd be separated, they wouldn't mix "The Bad Elements" with "The Good Elements".

I bought the Oxford OS Explorer map, and on one side I found about 1 inch of Byways. There's tons and tons and tons of footpaths and not much less bridleways.

Then you have this; Says it's a byway on the map, but no go for bikes.

But what really bugs me, is that a legal motorbike, or off road car, can barely be heard through the trees, and the "path" only needs to be one-car-wide. It's like everybody is so f**king selfish that this little one-car-wide-channel won't be allowed anywhere. If there's no walkers (and above all no unpredictable f**king horses) on that path, nobody would know. Nobody.

But hey... I'm getting more and more nudged towards that big country down under. Plenty of space there. :thumb2

Finally, I'll be joining the TRF in January. :clap I feel better now. :thumb
