Beacons Rally

i really enjoyed the run on my xchallenge but then i was running in the beginners section and took the easy routes where possible. for me it was nice to put at the back and not be over taken all the time or hold up anyone on the specials. as it went i pretty much got a clear run, the ruts were a nightmare but a lot of paddling saw me through, though a lot of drops and lifts going on that 2nd special. the beginners doing a lap less than everyone else was a great thing for me as it felt like i had achieved something even if it wasnt the whole thing

best wishes to molly, dibs and all else who got injured for a speedy recovery

roll on the cambrian

Just to show that we can't please all the people all the time, here are a few comments from some riders who took the time to contact us directly :rob

Bit slow for a thank you note -- sorry -- but many, many thanks for yet another terrific event. Very grateful for all your hard work in providing us all with such a great weekend's entertainment. Perfect combination of everything, really. Even the ruts had a certain appeal . . .

Thanks to all the team for another brilliant weekend, I've just unloaded the 5th or 6th load from the washing machine, and Alastair and I have just washed the bikes. The Beacons is the toughest one we do all year, but bit's all doable even if it's hard and physical. Having the option of doing the rutted test on Saturday was a good CoC decision and shortening the test on Sunday was a even better! If only to avoid the faster riders who were going for a result from being baulked by a fallen or stuck bike.

Our entries for the Cambrian will be done tonight!

Best regards Roger Brown.

i just wanted to express my thanks to you and all involved in the Beacons Rally. From my prespective as a rider in the beginners section it was great to actually feel that i had achieved something rather than busting a gut to try (and fail) to complete the full rally. it was also great to be at the tail end of the field and not feel like i was in any ones way or holding things up and also to have a chance at completing a special without having to stop to let someone through or be overtaken frequently (it didnt quite happen but it was a lot closer than usual :) )

many thanks once more

Best wishes
Ian (Fews)

Just a short note to say thanks very much to you and all of the organisers and marshalls for putting on such a great Rally again, it was good to get back to Wales after the Ryedale & Kielder. It makes you appreciate the varied and sometimes challenging terrain that is on offer. The rain on Saturday made things a little more interesting, and the drier weather on Sunday made life a little easier, especially when riding with a hangover after too many beers with Patsy the night before!

I have just put in my entry for the Cambrian so am looking forward to more of the same.

Best regards

Chris Barwick

And if anyone thought that the course was as difficult as an enduro, they've never ridden a real enduro, never mind the Beacons Enduro

We do our best with what we have - I was with my wife in the Freelander doing the timing at the start of test 2 on Saturday / test 1 on Sunday after getting home on the Thursday night after a 36 hour journey returning back from riding an Enfield Bullet around the Himalayas :thumb2

I'm in, not sure why after my performance at the Beacons

the beacons is allways the most difficult of the year the weather just made sure of it , the cambrian is allways rideable ???????????? so no reason to miss it ,although all the rallys have been so close together its hard to keep funding them, and not having enough space in between them doesnt help .as the hafren is only two weeks before doesnt help either .but thats a one day its cheaper to do . so hopefully see you at one or the other or both ???? mm

actually i rode the beacons enduro 84 85 86 87 i won the british enduro championship because most couldnt get to the finish
!!that was really tough .so was selkirk in 1985 where only 5 of us finished on the saturday and i was one of them !!!!!! i was riding a proper enduro bike ,and a hell of alot younger .
i broke my back in 1987 and couldnt ride again untill 2007 when i started rallys again and love it ...the beacons was tough on a big bike thats for sure but i still think its one of the best events of the year .give me a 450 ktm and i would think its a piece of piss too!!!!!
so if any body want s to show me how to get my bm up those ruts in the pissing down rain strewn with other bikes and riders great i cant wait see you there...my point is we all have different abilitys and alot of people really had a tough time i feel for them and hope it doesnt put them off ,what i think is the best and fastest growing motorcycle sport available to us all moly..

I told you how to do it Moly - just wheelie all the way and you'll keep those pots out of the ruts  - your right though the ruts were too much for the boxers but there was no easy way to cut them out completely on the Saturday, hence the option of not riding the test - you would have got a better time by not riding it as in the end it was your time that set the "bogey" time for all those that didn't :blast

Those were the days, 200 starters and 30 finishers was common - the challenge was finishing not how fast you could ride around a test in a field - I rode Selkerk in 85, and didn't come close to finishing. I was CoC of a round of the World Enduro Championship in 1999 and had to make the course easier than our British Championship event as Jonny Foreigner likes a trail ride with lots of tests in fields, enduro's ain't what they used to be in "our" day Moly.

Like most modern off-road enduro type events Trail Bike Rallies were "invented" by WTRA at the request of Gordon Jones, the then KTM importer, to give the late John Deacon some Dakar like practice. I wrote the original rules/regulations for the first Cambrian Rally and they haven't changed much since.

WTRA (aka Bob Perring) also "invented" Forestry Enduros (the Beacons was the first Enduro to be held in a forest), Hare and Hounds and Short Course Enduros.

thanks for that !!!!!!!!setting the bogey time was not the intension but given the choice again........ i'd ride it ... must be mad !!!!!!
!!!!but thats just the way it is its tough to get it right i know ,i remember gordon, i rode for him before pro curcuit lovely bloke ,
this is only my view but ithink the demise of enduros was down to there difficulty of many of them like just like the blackwater 100!!!!!! ....people just wanted to ride not maul there bollox off, personally tougher the better !!because it demolished the moto x ers who ventured in and suited my shit or bust attack style but that was a long time ago and the best time in my life for sure .......... now the rallys suit me, good fun ,nice people, relaxed ,and just riding my bike ..allthough after the beacons i think the bm is going to have to go for a single ?
hope i get to ride at cambrian mm

Rallies are great
Rallies in Wales are Greater
Rallies in Wales in the wet are spot on.

You'll never please all the people all of the time, I wouldn't worry too much about it. I thought the event was spot on. It was tricky and the ruts were awful - but did it put me off - no, not really.

I was on a small(ish) puddle jumper, ideal for the terrain. It would have been very tough on bigger bikes, especially for novices. Something to think about for next year when laying out the course, the test that was set out to replace the rutted section was very fast and most riders would feel that they have accomplished a good time.

Roll on Cambrian, Hopefully this year I will not spend quite as much time under water...

I have many fond memories of the Blackwater 100 - but not the super tough US one. I rode the the one run in Ireland at Ballyhooly in the early 90's - one of the most enjoyable 2 day enduros, especially as ruts were nowhere to be seen and like all good Irish events it started at a pub :thumb
