Thought I would change my rear tyre tonight and try the technique of using the sidestand to break the bead shown on this site somewhere

No chance with a battlewing 6000 mile old

had to resort to adapting my moose board to take a 17 inch wheel to break the bead

bit heath robinson but it worked

what do other people use to break the bead when they do it themselves at home

Courtesy of Maverick.

beats f*cking about with other flimsy options. Does just what it says on the tin.

99% of households have a ready made bead breaker that works perfectly

A simple garden spade, fit some nylon rim protectors to the edge of your rim, rest the spade against them, the curve of the spade matches to wheel diameter, jump on spade, tyre pops off bead - simples!!:D

This has worked for me for years now and does not mark the rims at all, then I fit and balance all my own tyres, made a simple adaptor up to suit the back wheel and they are spot - on, sorted :thumb

G clamp - not over the tyre, but through the spokes and onto the tyre, so you only need a small one.

I agree with Poucher, never used anything other than a good strong garden spade and always does the job. I find best result is to jump on it with both feet and kick downwards before you topple back to the floor. Doesn't look good but works. Also make sure wheel is supported such that you cannot do any damage to brake disc.
