As far as I can work out its purely for looks - but (and this is why I have one) IMHO it is an improvement!

I don't get it either. Is 'my beak is longer than yours' a good thing? How long before it's too long?

none, completely pointless like a lot of the deformed metal trinkets that can be fitted to 'protect' the bits and bobs on a GS, if you have money to burn

I can't think of any benifit to fitting a beak extender either but I did and it does look good especially on a white bike.

They are mostly cosmetic. But they also protect the paintwork against stone chips, and when off roading.
