... A week or several ago I foolishly believed that Bill Gates chappy and clicked the tit that said get your browser upgraded to MS IE8. I have XP with SP3 installed on my lap-top.

... Actually the feckin' thing pestered me into and, like the tw@t I am, I folded :augie

... Here's the thing. Assuming I can get now IE to open at all, which seems a bit a black art and I'm not sure how I'm managing it at all, I now have this stoopid message across the top of the browsing window "IE is currently running with add-ons disabled. Click here to manage, disable, or remove your add-ons"

... Well I never knew I had any in the first place, however I 'click here' and it stirs up an impressive looking list, all of which have "enabled" clearly listed next to them. There seems to be no clicky thing that says "you can enable add-ons here" so I am a mite confused to boot.

... Wot's more, I can no longer view U-bend, the opening slide-show on UKGSer, nor any other embedded video content. Most of which I couldn't give a feck about, but occasionally comments about the odd gem amongst the effluent make me realise I might be missing something.

... I have googled and searched all the wise words out there but remain none the wiser myself. I tried to revert to IE7, wot was working just tickety boo before Mr Gates trampled on my bliss, but alas that has the same problem.


... I really yearn to see that Hitler Video again, can anyone advise me how I can sort it :bow

Download Firefox or Chrome or Safari and delete IE8.

IE8 was reported in the computing press as having serious security flaws. I have never used IE again after I got firefox. If that doesn't work (and on photobucket it seems to have some issues) then I use safari as a backup. Now there is also Chrome.

Unless you really like the MS label then just change browser :thumb2
 
Sounds like you need a Java plugin Jon.

No, its not intravenous coffee :D

Check in the options that it's enabled first, and if it is but still isnt working, google up "java client" and install the latest version.:)

It's more likely to be the Flash plugin if it's YouTube that you're having issues with :thumb

Check the "Properties" of the shortcut you are using to launch IE

There is a "run with add-ons disabled" option

Normal IE should say something like

"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe"

The run disabled option should say something like

"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -extoff

Maybe your shortcuts have become confused?

Now fire up the Firefox, click on "Tools" and then "Add-ons". Install "Adblock plus" and "NoScript". Lots of others as well that may take your fancy.

Stops a lot of the crap from getting onto your PC. If you've not looked before it frightening how many companies are out here tracking your browsing and preferences.

P.S. What a sucker you are! Believed Gates? If he sold houses he'd be in gaol for substandard and unfinished goods!

... I followed Tom's suggestion and I am now a seasoned Firefox user of some two hours experience, Chris Kelly could only just get his head around Gin & Tonic in such a fleeting moment of the space-time continuum.

... It's all going absolutely swimmingly, my, wasn't that Adolf a card :D

... I have disabled the Windows automatic update. It will from henceforth merely advise me that the notorious backdoor bandit Gates is trying to take me up the cornhole. I intend to resist his advances. :eek

IE8 has probably disabled third party plugins like spam/search engines/toolbars etc. Enabling them again is probably a BAD idea. :blast

This is probably why it wont load now as it's detected a malware plug-in and shut-down.
 
I'd been running IE8 for some time with no problems but decided to go over to Firefox, and IE8 now comes up with the same message Bede has got....
