The camping variety

I've tried mats

Cheap foam
Thick foam
Self inflating
Self inflating superwide & super thick not bad,

But still on the floor and not very comfy

I tried a camp bed, one with the clip in legs to tension the fecker the W or lazy U type

Good, but one fatal flaw, if you move length ways the legs collapse , so you have to adopt a strange roll into bed arrangement

easier said then done in a sleeping bag


So i looked at a more substantial one

I found it uses the X type leg arrangement

Substantial but almost the width of the panniers and weighs a lot 22lbs eeks

Anyone out there got any recommendations that may be more suitable ??

Hey Santa,

I have used a Robens Outpost Low Granite Grey I think you can get an XL version. It comes with Staps to secure a sleeping mat. Very comfortable in this set up. Have not used it for more than two nights at a time but being off the ground was/is a game changer. They do a high version also to make it easier to get on /out of it too.

Agreed its a minefield.

Camping beds, if in a big enough tent are ok but obviously no good for bike camping.
good quality self inflating mattress are the best I find, but good ones don't roll down so small either.
Its a compromise.

If your in a car then you can have anything you want, and it shouldn't be a problem.
if that's the case get a 10cm mat with a decent R rating.

When I am on the bike i used this off amazon.
I'm a side sleeper and 17 stone and it keeps my hips off the floor and gives me a decent nights kip.
It packs down small too, its easy to roll up and fit back in the bag... i know some aren't
I use a USB pump to blow it up in seconds this one

I have an Exped MegaMat 10 LXW and it’s soooo comfy! I’m actually going to be using it tonight when I get up to Scotland. I have 4 other airbeds ( 2 Thermarest, 1 other Exped and an Amok one ) and the MegaMat is by far the comfiest. The only downside is its pack size. Great if you can put it across the rear seat though because it comes with its own waterproof roll bag. I’ve tried a couple of cot type beds but just couldn’t get on with them. Not cheap but well worth it.
