Beeping, squeeking and now chattering brakes

I mentioned in another thread a while ago about my brakes making an electronic beeping sound when under heavy braking (R1100GS non ABS). Also that two of the brake pads seemed loose, and would move when the wheel was rolled backwards and forward. I still don't know what the cause of this is, but now they've developed a squeeking which sounds just like a stone in there but not having the right tools to take off the brakes and have a look. I haven't had a chance to get the blighter out, If indeed it is a stone. Now they are making a right racket, they continue to squeek only now they chatter when slowing to anything under 15mph. As for the electronic beeping i've not had the balls to try heavy braking for a while in this weather, well not on the front brake anyway.

Now I assume the squeeking is a stone and that the chattering is due to a couple of the retaining clips being missing from the brake pads. But can anyone at please tell me if it's safe to ride at least? :nenau Or if there might be another cause for all this noise, i'm starting to turn heads for all the wrong reasons :o

What are you doing owning a bike and not having the tools required to even remove the calipers ?? :nenau

Likewise not having the savvy to be able to look between the disc and caliper to see how much pad material is remaining ??

Don`t use the bike until the brakes have been checked.....or things will turn dangerous (if they`re not already) and/or very expensive before you realise.

In fact, things are already dangerous by your comment about not having the balls to brake heavily.....stay off the road until things are verified to be safe.

Tarka, it might be the case that he (?) is safer not having the tools? Don't be so judgemental, mind you as it's an 1100, I'd have thought that he'd have a shedfull of tools.

You must have a housefull, owning a Ural combo

Who said I haven't checked how much pad was left? Sergeant Pluck just suggested it as something to look for. As for the tools, I don't have an allen key which fits, have been meaning to get one but haven't got round to it yet. As far as I was concerned I had one that would fit, but my tool box seems to have a leak and most of my tools end up in very strange places. It of course has nothing to do with me leaving them out and never putting them back, oh no, not me. And the braking heavily comment was meant more as a comment on the weather rather than anything else.

Did you get out of the wrong side of bed tarka? don't be testy tarka :nono, I don't mean to be rude, it's just you seem to be pretty short with people whenever i've read your posts. Cheer up :thumb :beerjug:

You could be right about things being safer due to a lack of tools, but as for the judgemental comment,he`s using a motorised conveyance on public roads and with suspect brakes that he`s now afraid to use fully he`s not just a risk to himself,he`s a risk to every other poor fecker he may possibly collide with.
Therefore he needs to stay off the road until the brakes have been proven to be safe.

No mate...I didn`t....but re-read your post from a third party`s point of view.

I knew it! I was just wondering how long it would be before Rommel came marching by to stomp all over another perfectly reasonable thread with his big size nines!! T0SA, how dare you ask questions pertaining to bikes on a bikers site?! You should think yourself lucky he didn't lock the thread and possibly even move it to a different section!

Wise words mate :thumb

Loose Pads = Your pads should have small spring clips that hold around the brake pad locating pin. Some makes of pad don't have them fitted. These pads( ebc ?) are also very hard, which would cause the squeel you also asl about.

You can try putting brake grease on the REAR of the pads ( or copperslip), it's not a permanant solution, but will stop the annoying squeels for a while.

My 1100 front pads chattered when I roled the bike back and forth as well. The pads werent worn out but have been replaced under warranty which cured it.

I took the brakes of and had a look for any stones and didn't find anything, gave them a bit of a clean up as they were pretty filthy. I did as Steptoe suggested and put a little copperslip on the rear of the pads while I was there. :thumb :thumb it's sorted now, no squeek or chatter, lovely..... However :( there was something I noticed which may or may not be a bad thing (I'd say it is a bad thing but what do I know? :nenau ) I opened the front brake fluid reservoir to have a look at the level as I wanted to be sure the sight wasn't telling lies, which it wasn't, but when I looked inside there was copperslip in the brake fluid, not that much but enough to make me wonder if something needs to be done. If so, what?

When was the last time you changed the brake fluid, some people say its a yearly thing, i used to change it every winter and it always looked very healthy but you can never tell how much moisture (condensation or poor fluid storage) has been absorbed :nenau Anyway, sounds like it needs a bloody good going over, at least the brakes anyway :o You can't be too careful about brakes :nenau

I've not had the bike long, so it's the first time i've looked in there, i'm thinking of riding it to Steptoes shop to let him give it a service to make sure there's nothing else like this that i'm missing, things that may not be so easy to find. Just need to convince SWMBO that it's a good way to spend money, after all if she cares for my safety she'll be more than happy. :nono
