Do the police spec R1200 RTs have a different loom, with connectors pre-wired for horns, lights and comms.

There are regular horror stories about the electrics on plod bikes that have been carve into the main loom, did you have issues with electrics ?

Is there a way to buy an ex-plod bike directly, rather than paying a commission to the online sellers who are bumping up the price with no value add ?

Yes a different loom, but from what I can tell it is all BMW factory stuff - it's all covered in the black cloth tape that BM use. There are no signs of any DIY bits being added but there are approx a dozen spare connectors at various points around the chassis where the police lights etc have been plugged into. The majority of these have been capped with proper caps.
All the little bits of extra trim and covers (The rubber inlay that sits on top of the 2nd battery for example), have BMW part numbers on them so I guess anything extra can be sourced by the authorities if they wish, no need for any bodges as far as I can see.
I was intending removing the second battery to allow the glovebox to be used but when I saw it was all a 'proper job' I put it back together again. I have heard of people tracing the wires back, cutting and sealing them but didn't fancy doing that ..

Not sure on the source of them once the police have de-commissioned them but I think it's some kind of auction. Easy enough to find something on google I would think.

I suppose it's down to the police workshops and the mechanics whether they bodge anything into the loom or not and also how good a job they do of de-commissioning it.

you also have a different ECU map for authorities bikes and a shorter first gear for better take off....you should notice (if you have a good one), that its quicker than a standard civvy bike....

Yes. Google "police vehicle auctions Witney". There's an auction place in Witney, Oxon that hold a specialist auction once a month to dispose of police vehicles. Haven't been for a while but used to be very good. Bought myself an ex police vehicle there once that was possibly the Best Buy of my life!!!

As you rightly say, the bikes come off the production line with all the relevant wiring, & parts, as opposed to aftermarket installation. The second battery is redundant, as in service it runs the radio & blue lights, so that even if that battery was flattened (which with LED's takes hours) the machine can be started & ridden off. There is a shorter first gear (as per the GSA Enduro box) but I don't think in the real world it makes a huge difference, as the other five as as per normal. Ex police bikes tend to run nicely because they haven't been babied as much as some private purchases.

Only thing it needs soon is a front tyre (2.2mm tread). Was going to fit one but thought the buyer might prefer to fit one of his choice..??
On top of the major service, BMW panniers and new grab rails it now has genuine BMW 28 litre topbox.

Brilliant , recommended ,easy to do, quick delivery, seem like good quality.
The supplier has a tutorial on youtube if you haven't done them before. The pack has two for the fairing sides and two smaller ones for the panniers. Went with the black decals- they look tidy against the silver grey paintwork.
