Hello

I have a R100 GS (32L tank) and it’s my everyday transport

I’m a light guy and I travel with only a small backpack.

The problem is that the rear spring/shock e destroying my spine!

In the rear I have a Hagon shock that I adjust it as soft as possible. Even that way it gives a very had ride. (front is ok)

Before finish destroying my spine I need to change the rear suspension.

Without spending to much euros what do you recommend? I’m whiling to try used solutions…

Thanks

Start by taking the backpack off and using a small tankbag :D

What exactly is hurting your back the soft continues bumps or the hard vibrations when set up a bit? I have a knackered back as well and found if the suspension is to soft it hurts more than when to hard :comfort

Ditto the backpack.Stop using it as soon as possible.Get a tankbag/topbox etc,let the bike take the strain. Also as said, check the spring 1st,the shock may be fine.

Measure the sag with you on and off the bike. With you sitting on the bike and the damping backed completely off you should use 1/3rd of the available spring travel. If you cannot back the spring off far enough to do this you need a lighter spring.

Have you set Damping correctly?

Before you go mad changing shocks / springs etc. check you have set the damping correctly (even Hagon have damping adjustment, don't they?). It sounds like you could well have it set too stiff.

If this is the case it won't make any difference how soft you have the spring. All you will get is give you a lower seat hight. Soften off the damping and it will probably sort out your problem.

Also as said above. Loose the back pack, put the weight on the bike.

hello

spring:

no load - 20,5cms
bike load - 18,0cms
bike+driver - 16,5 cms

shock is as soften as possible

were can I find a softer spring?

"Loose the back pack" - looks a very good ideia. what topcase should you recomend to a 1990 r100 gs?

thanks

There are plenty of low cost no name Boxes on Ebay which are OK.

Get the type which fix to the mounting plate with bolt bolts which are inside the box and go down through the base into the mount - the Givi type fixing will eventually work loose - DAHIK

You want around 45 mm bike and rider sag so the 40mm that you have shouldn't be causing major problems unless the damping is stuffed, or the front is completely out of kilter - check that the bike and rider sag on the front is 5 to 10 mm more than the rear.
With the PD tank you may have longer preload spacers in the forks to compensate for the extra weight of a full tank and this may be part of the problem.

Does any ine know what is the front / rear weight of the unloaded bike?

I would suggest your biggest problem is the Hagon shock it's self. When new they work well, but once run in they will fade to a poor average in only a few thousand miles.
It is not practically possible to replace the spring on Hagon shocks, as they are manufactured to be a throwaway item. Though certain companies can strip and rebuild most used shocks.

You're best option considering your requierments is to spend the money and but a White Power or Ohlins shock built to your weight and riding requierments. One of these will potentially last you a life time, as they are fully rebuildable, with plenty of easy access spare parts.

Response from Hagon:

“The custom built Hagon monoshock for your bike is priced at £325.00 including VAT plus £29.50 for a carrier delivery.

With the information you have given us just changing the spring rate will not be enough, fitting a lighter spring will not work with the damper. A complete change of spec is required for you.
The cost to rebuild your Hagon Monoshock is £144.50 ( including vat ) including the spring change.
We replace everything except shock body and road end. Bronze bushes are replaced if necessary.

Your rebuilt Hagon Monoshock has a 2 year guarantee”

Is it worth it or should I change for another brand?

No question in it. Change to another brand. :rob

Hagon is a budget shock maker and will never do long term quality. A secondhand WP or Ohlins will be cheeper and much much better.

My options:

New
WP, (witch model?)
Ohlins, (witch model?)
Wilbers (witch model?)

Secondhand WP, Ohlins, Wilbers – does any one used has one to sell? (if I buy used I’ll probably will have to send it to adjust to my weight. Right?)

A year or so ago, if you went for Ohlins or Wilber with the remote pre-laod adjuster there wasn't much difference in price, without remote preload, the Wilbers was significantly cheaper. That was UK prices though.

Steptoe has what looks like a Wilber on a bike he's breaking ;)
