About 20 mins out of the centre of Marrakech, we hit the piste and do a nice long open, very fast motorway piste that's basically a wide hard compact gravel road.

We take all off-road level groups out that way because its a good way of getting beginners used to feeling their back wheels getting loose and it's totally non-threatening, so you can just relax for an hour or two and enjoy the feeling of riding under a big sky.

The fact that in the distance you can see the (usually) snow capped High Atlas looming and you know that you'll be riding over there later in the day is an added bonus, but it's a really nice place to start a trip from Marrakech (we'll be doing it on the KTM450EXC trips that we're starting next April)

Anyway, to cut to the chase, there's a hill about a quarter of a mile off this motorway piste that has tracks going up it.....it's not a particularly big hill and in all honesty, it's not that challenging, but it's fun anyway and when you have a group of bikes, a hill and some tracks, there's only one thing you can really do isn't there!!!

Muggins here has to go first of course, as there are some total novices in the group and there's a technique to going up a steep hill- I have to show everyone how not to do it :blast:augie

Nearly there......speed dropping, second gear, keep the power on just enough to chug up but not to spin up too much or come to a halt

Like I said, not a huge hill but fun anyway...it was a real shame that the sky was grey that day or this shot would show the Alas behind the hill and it would have been a glorious thing.......

And then there were two.......

Then Richard on his trusty 650 GS :clap:clap:clap:clap

IMG_9184.JPG

It's hard to tell from these pics but it does get a bit loose up towards the top, and there's a bit of a ledgey bit too so you really do need to keep a bit of momentum to carry you up it......

And then, there were three :D

Time for the smaller bikes to join us......Roy on his Kwacker-

First pictures fine but after that I get the dreaded red crosses:(

It's the dreaded Google-host issue again. If you right-click, open in new tab then re-load the page, the images appear with the text.

Roy's Son-In-Law Chris next on his Yamaha.......He was very nervous about coming up but it turned out over the trip that he was a very natural rider and came on leaps and bounds :clap:clap

See that white thing falling off the back of his bike? His wetwipes :blast :D
IMG_9206.JPG

Just on the bumpy bit....you don't see it until you're on it and everyone's shouting 'GAS! POWER!! GAS!" from the top.....

IMG_9207.JPG

And then, there were five :D

Nope, only get two pictures all the rest dead links

Well I can see them all.

Imagine someone riding up a steep hill. Now repeat for the rest of the pictures and you'll have it. :D

Brilliant :thumb2 Worked a treat for me...

Have you given your CV to Stevie Wonder? :D

Edit: now I can see 4 pics

Peter really wanted to come up on the 990 but I think Fidelma had other ideas and had a word in his shell like :D

IMG_9211.JPG

We never try and push people too far out of their comfort zone and I think Fidelma may have made it too uncomfortable if he's have gone up, so we started coming down instead.

Forgot to turn off the ABS so I came down a wee bit fast.....you just hold on and ride it out though, you know you're not going to hit anything so weight on the pegs, arse back in the seat and suck on that cigarette as you go :D

IMG_9212.JPG

Suspension compressed right down at the bottom 'cos I'm going too fast:blast

Note Richard's packet of wetwipes on slope behind me:D

IMG_9214.JPG

DOH!!
First time trying to use Picasa albums and it doesn't seem to be going to well :blast

Sorry!

Andy next......

IMG_9217.JPG

Then Roy....

IMG_9220.JPG

Chris.....

IMG_9225.JPG

And finally, Richard on the little 650 (damn good bike actually!)

IMG_9230.JPG

He's happy to make it down......he did some of it on one wheel only and it took 10 minutes for his heart to stop racing, but everyone made it up, and down, in one piece and had a bit of a giggle along the way :D

It's a nice little hill......it looks easy in the photos and it's not actually hard to do, but it's a nice introduction to some more technical stuff later in the trip and it's a good confidence booster too......

Hopefully on the next trip that we pass that way on, we'll have better weather and the awesome backdrop that is behind the hill will show up better...... Expect this thread to be bounced next year :)

Not sure why some people can't see all the pics....this was a bit of a tester of the picasa online albums TBH....this may help.....

But I think I'll stick to SMugmug for the proper ride reports :blast
