I am considering fitting a y-piece to my otherwise bog standard '01 1150gs. Can anybody tell me what exactly is the benefit of fitting a y-piece or if it is a good idea at all?

i am in the belief its lighter by a few pounds and it allows the system to breath better, i also believe that it improves mid range power ,also supposed to help in the surging dept..
have a search of this site you should get all the answers ..

I did it yesterday.
I fitted an AndyCam "Y" piece with the standard can - no other changes. There is a noticable increase in power throughout the rev range and it feels smoother too.
£120 well spent so far.

I had a Remus y piece fitted on an otherwise stock early 1150 by Ocean BMW in Plymouth. While it was being fitted, plus a service, Bill gave me a twin plug 1150 to try - felt sharper than mine, excellent pick up and response. However, when I got mine back, with Y piece, it felt better than the twin plug - pick up was better, roll on felt great, front wheel picks up easier. An excellent mod! Lots cheaper than a new bike. Just need some new shocks now...

What about this one then - it allows you to run out of fuel and not worry about causing major damage to the cat when flooding it with petrol on the start up.
Someone on the board also made a point that it allows you to get away with putting poor quality petrol through in poorer countries - not too sure about that though.

Does make it sound throatier but not much louder. Also tends to backfire if you roll off the throttle suddenly - Don't do it near horses!

Y-piece

Thanks for the info lads, sounds great...but does it need any other modifications and can if affect reliability / longevity in any way?

fitted a y piece 6weeks ago with the standard can, sounded better, much better throttle response, and more midrange.

Shoots to the red line quicker, runs smoother, slightly heavier on fuel,
popping back on the overrun.

Fitted a remus revolution a couple of weeks ago(road legal)sounds even better deaper noise looks better.

Best money I've spent on the bike highly recommended.:beerjug: blu
