Bent pillion footpeg hanger

OK chaps have any of you adventurous types bent your pillion footpeg hangers?

I had an off in the snow back in January and didn't think much of it. Only today when my beautiful assistant jumped aboard did she inform me that something was not right in the stern quarters of the 800.

The right peg in the photo is the normal one by the way. The left is... err... a little off shall we say

In your experience what do you think would be the best approach to get this back into position? heat it up and slowly bend it by way of leverage with a big wrench or heat it and bash it into position?

Looks odd, its taken a lot of force to bend tubes yet there is no other sign of damage such as scuffing or scratching. I would have expected the tubes to bend in wards on impact.
Before you start bashing it park next to another GS and look to see exactly what is different. I have just looked at mine and compared to your first picture the footrest pivot is on the same level as the centre stand extension and about 50mm in front of it. (Mines a 09 bike)
I would like to say the frame member holding the hanger is easily detachable for repairing and re coating but after checking the repair CD it looks a real sod involving the removal of the tank.
A lot of heat in the tubes before you straighten them would be the normal advice, but this will take off all the paint locally and any carelessness with the flame could end up melting the tank (or worse). Try asking advice from your local bike shops, perhaps a specialist with hydraulic manipulators can do the work cold.

Thanks sooty. The adv-spec bars took a lot of it which is why I was surprised to see the rear foot peg so bent out of shape. There is scuffing at the cut off of the tubes. It is in a very convenient place. Well cosmetically convenient. The bend is not convenient at all

It wouldn't bend inwards as the tube is already bent outwards a force below would just accentuate this. In the same way if you fall with your arms outstretched and hit the deck with the palms of your hands. With luck the shock will mean you bend your arms at your elbows and thus stopping it travelling up to your shoulders. Not very scientific I know hopefully you know what I mean.

Scaffold tube, bit of heat from a blow torch and pull it forward again...

I think the unequal lengths of the members of the hanger have caused the upward 'twist'.

The deck

It was a few weeks back. I was coming down a 14% snowy/icy hill in Austria and it started to slide. I looked down the hill and saw lots of objects I could potentially hit. Two people, 4 cars, a railing, a house, a river, rocks and a dog. I figured it was safer to lowside it. so I laid it down. The crash bars too a load but didn't bend and I reckon the crash bars pivoted the bike in such a way that the next piece of metal in line to get a bashing was the bottom of the footpeg. If it had scraped it on the side I reckon it wouldn't have bent.

Like uneven sideburns you don't notice til you take a look in the mirror

Take off the footpeg, get a long length of appropriate size square tube, attach it to the peg bracket and jump on it till it's straight.

Mine is also bent and I also noticed that the tubing the footpeg hanger is attached to, is also bent.

Let me know if and how you got yours bent back.

I'm planning to get a set of StahlKoffer panniers and Bernie told me that they could bend it for me if the pannier rails does not fit.

I'm planning to get a set of StahlKoffer panniers and Bernie told me that they could bend it for me if the pannier rails does not fit.

I have a friend in here who makes his own sidecars and he has a very long metal bar. He said he'd help me bend it back in place this week. I'll take my video camera and put together a "HowTo" video and if it all goes wrong it will be a "How Not To" video.

Be carfull with the rod.... I was looking at one of my 650's with bent footpeg, the bl..dy subframe is bent as well, the subframe is just an 20x20mm square tube, I figured I need to strip the f...ing thing to get it right...............

I think the V-Man has a good point - I'd think about trying to get some heat into the bent bits before trying to straighten them ... then down to Halfords for a black rattle-can...

The black rattle can is ready and primed. First up will be the adv-spec crash bars and then after I've scraped the rear footpeg when bending it back into shape it too will get some treatment. I'll have to restrain myself from wanting to spray the entire bike black

If you look closely at your first picture you can see the bent square tubing to the left of the license plate. I haven't bothered straightening it yet to much dismateling.

I would also take the exhaust off before any works just in case, but if you like adding more battle scars to the bike then leave it on....

My friend Greg was calling in air support to bomb it back into shape... as the leverage trick was not really working

It is still not right. It's better but it will require dismantling everything on the rear end of the bike

exactly the same has happened to Mrs Berins 800GS, after several lie -downs. It all still works OK but leave the MM panniers at a rather jaunty angle. I haven't looked to see if the subframe is bent but I will. If anyone comes up with a good solution which doesn't involve dismantling finds out who could mend it I'd be interested

I have looked at some of the BMW designs of the rear subframe and my photo shows a bolt just up from the bend. I am beginning to wonder if that particular section of the subframe can be removed and replaced. Essentially the strut that holds the footpeg hanger. I am going on the hunt for more detailed diagrams of that area.

To be honest if I could just bend the footpeg into place I wouldn't be too fussed about the bend. It doesn't affect my luggage setup or anything else. I'm only doing this for my lady's comfort
