While I was changing my steering head bearings earlier, I noticed the steering stop is badly bent.:eek

So, should I try heating it up and bending it back or just leave it?:nenau:nenau

If it isn't causing problems on full lock, leave it. You run the risk of breaking it off and too much heat could cause problems.

Thanks, I was leaning that way myself. Its not causing a problem so I will leave it.

Just a thought................... when it does break off, probably sooner rather than later as it is now weakened (looks as though it may be fractured rather than just bent), something will probably hit the tank with some force. It maybe an idea to pre-empt this by trimming the stop back a bit, drilling and tapping a hole and fitting a bolt to act as a steering stop.

FYI, MOT failure if the steering stop is ineffective

Check the spacing of the top tube thru the lower engine rails up by the headstock are they equidistant or closer one side than t'other?? A millimetre or two isn;t so bad and usually found on high mileage bikes but a cm is bad news

I'd heat it and straighten it or cut it off and weld something in it's place

Damien,
Do you have a dakar 32lt tank on?

From the pic looks like you have the alloy piece thats fits ON the steering stop:confused:
That alloy piece is for the big tank ,the indicators clobber the tank if you dont have it on.

Whilst you are this far, I would try and sort it now.

Thanks for the advice guys.

I don't have the large tank, just the standard item. On closer inspection, there is a crack between the frame and the stop on the right hand side in the top picture.

It would probably be best to weld that up and build up that side with weld and grind down the opposite side.

Unfortunately I don't have a welder, will see about borrowing one.

Damien don;t forgot to look at the steering head from the saddle position if it did that it had a hard tumble somewhere along the way

Thanks again guys.

Jay, I had a good look at the steering head and apart from the bent stop, all seems to be in order, measurements each side are similar enough and no wrinkles in the tubes or the webs.

could some one please measure the stop on an un-damaged machine and post up the dimensions?
There is no hurry as I won't get a chance to go at this for a few weeks, and I need to give myself a crash course in mig welding, as I haven't done any in about 25 years.

Thanks for the kind offer Jay, but its a bit of a haul and I don't think the Mrs would take kindly to me disappearing over the horizon in her V70 with the bike in the back!

That's correct - there's a hole in the steering stop whch allows you to use a bolt and nut to adjust the steering stop to your particular bike.
e.g. Later RT's had a longer bolt fitted than the early RT's due to the different screen and bars. If you used the early bolts on the later RT the bars hit the screen.
Some bikes just have purpose factory made studs pushed into the steering stop. :thumb2
