Hi All

Grateful for views on the best - cost effective - cylinder head guards for my new 2011 GS. Understand from thread s various that there are plastic and metal options from BMW and others - prices seem to vary enormously.

The Metal BMW guards look nice but I suspect the price will not be!

Any views?

Have used the plastic BMW guards and found that they scuff up quite easily and are not that tough even in a low speed fall (i.e. slow speed, loose surface, off camber, oops kind of falling over).

Have subsequently used the Touratech metal guards and found them much more robust e.g. when the bike was hit from behind by a car doing 20mph shunting me forward. Cylinder guard gouged a 2 ft long scar in the tarmac. Only minimal damage to the guard and still perfectly servicable afterwards.

I have fitted the BMW metal guards now to my 2010 GS as they were about the same price as Touratech. The fittings are different on the pre 2008 guards therefore could not transfer these between bikes and sold mine on e-bay.

I have the plastic ones and a very big set of crash bars. I suspect the crash bars will take most of the brunt and you can throw the plastic ones out and get a new set. I'd put the money into the crash bars.
