I have a motorbins one I've had over 20 years, cast alloy.

Too big to carry so considering alternatives - going to see if I can make something i can attach to a tyre lever (big 'un shoved up frame spine), but in interim, who does the best one for garage use nowerdays?

My motorworks one seems to do the job, probably similar to the motobins one. Have you seen the one made by Henderson in the states http://www.hendersenprecision.com/indian_moto/bmw_products.html

or this one on eblag http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-R69S-...05?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item2ebefad7d1
I dont think it looks quite as robust as the henderson one

Just be carefully what you wish for - if the nut doesn't move easily a big strong spanner is only going to make it easier to strip the threads.

I made my spanner from a 50 cent auto jumble two leg puller. It was the type with a collar which screws down on to the top of the legs and cams them inwards. They are cheap because the are useless for pulling sprockets.
It has moved every nut it has been used on, without damaging them.
The ends of the legs and the centre spindle were ground/filed to a close fit in the gaps between the fins on the nuts.

Then it is just a case of tightening the thing up on the heated and lubed nut and giving the top end of the spindle a little tap with a rubber mallet.

If that doesn't move the nut try a bit more heat / penetrating oil/ whatever - any more brute force is just going to strip the thread, and it is usually the head which strips.
If more heat, etc, doesn't help it is probably better to split the nut and replace it rather than risk stripping the threads on the head.

Some interesting stuff there to give me ideas, Beemerboff, do you have a picture of that set up to help explain it?

I'm just looking for solutoins 'on the road' that don't include cold chisels. A couple of those look interesting and could be packed easily :thumb

Lube and a lack of over-tightening are the best things to start with ;)
