Wooo Hooo. :JB Off to Norway again! :bounce1 This time I want to film the good bits.... (most of the roads over there!)

I'm toying with the idea of getting one of these:-

Does the collective have any experience of these helmet cams or can anyone recommend an alternative.

Youtube to show quality :blast I had it bolted to the bike and used a Sony with LANC to control it. The bullet cam is battery powered and 8 AA batteries last about 5 hours, so I had it bike powered.

Easy to set up, one of the biggest faffs is keeping the video camera out of harms way from the weather etc. The LANC helps in this respect.
 
there's a video on you tube (You tube shite quality) shot on the RF Concepts.

it clearly shows the vignette which I got as the lens is so wide angle. plus you have a transformer, seperate mic and camera with lanc controller. NICE! the camera was a sony PC110 mini dv

this was shot on the samsung but thanks to youtube it's also shite plus if you look carefully you can see the edges 720x576 needs to be expanded by a couple % to make it fit and the audio was taken with the microphone on top of the camera it's very good. Was about £280 and there's supposed to be a new model coming out which promises to be HD

remember the Dog cam and all that other stuff is 4x3 ratio and 640x480 resolution they say it's a TV standard however I would despute that.

as for ease of use well

Samsung beat the lot

RF Concepts is very good but fiddly in comparison

they're all alright in very bright / good conditions but to watch hours and hours of it.....:doh


the RF Concepts is 4x3 ration and 720x576 that's DVD resolution as of rease of use it's alright.:augie

I use the samsung VP220L it's got a video head with mic single cable records an hour onto SD and it's again 4x3 ratio and 720x576 (but not water proof) but the camera can be use seperately

to be honest and this is my opinion :blast hours and hours of POV road riding is boring.

chop it to 3 mins of exciting stuff cos all the dull as dish water stuff will drive you to self harm mix it up with some stills:thumb2.

Editted. here is the sample footage from the suday times article love that side wind and that blokes only going at 10mph.... what gonna be like 50-80mph....

This was shot with a broadcast spec camera and I use a media composer to add the RF concept footage from POV angle from my paramotor camera and the Samsung head worn camera when the HP2 comes past. (you tube turned all that to shite as well)

Also this guy does a comparison test (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=QR9bUGW_ICw) on youtube of all the stand alone helmet cams. The thing I like about this cam is I don't need to hard wire it. It runs on 2 x AA batteries (they recommend energiser lithium) which are less than a quid each and last for 11 hours, it takes upto 32gb SDHC card, the highest quality recording uses 4 gb per hour, it cost $149 and takes about a week to come from the USA.

There are stacks of vids on youtube and the quality seems fine.

The other cam I like is from 4kam, they do a kit with a DVR which seems cool, if you can be bothered to get it hard wired to the bike.

My plan is to get the Tachyon XC and mount it somewhere where you can't see my speedo, not that I ride like an idiot but I occasionally break the speed limit (NOT in built up areas may I add):augie

I'll post something when I get sorted (waiting for delivery in March of my new GSA)
 
I've got the check the codec's which do the flash conversion as the videos I stuffed up on the tube are all old by comparison and things do move on. (you tube should not be used as a quality comparison as the picture quality is suspect and has been mucked about to make the media work in it's formatted window)

Thanks team. Some good links there.... Time for cam research, route planning and preperation. Nearly as much fun as the trip :D

I use Ram mounts and put it on rhs of the handlebar. The round base with the screw thread fits perfectly on a ram camera mount. If you need a pic pm me your email address :thumb2
 
I also bought a Tachyon - on Mike's recommendation - and am very pleased with it.
Here is my method of mounting it - made up an ally bracket for the fixed mount, containing a standard RAM ball:-

Seems very rigid - but haven't tried it in anger yet.

We use the RAM mount on the paramotor which shakes and viberates like V8 food processor. It's alright on the bike I've made a couple of brackets for the low shots and use a flexi arm from RAM, it's my belief that the RAM stuff is by far the best and most adaptable kit.

I also have a set of Mafrotto grips for the bigger camera kit which is heaps more money, it's very good but really only works when your sticking things to cars that have flat surfaces.

my advice is simple try every location with some test shots and workout which you like, generate more footage than you need and cut it to the "core" just the good stuff.

better to have 3 mins of really good stuff than 3 hours of pony.

(which is what I've ended up with)
 
On my 1200 GSA I used a p-clip that attached to the right hand indicator mounting bolt. Had to put tape around the camera so it got clamped by the p-clip.

Tried using soft foam, but it vibrated too much, tape and the rubber from the p-clip worked well IMO.
 
we also use strips of inner tube to pack the frame, camera, brackets or grips out cos it thick and rubbery and offers abit of grip:thumb2

it's not really a down grade the flash interface which makes the file nice and small can add artifacts and compression shite to the file making it look durty.
