I've been debating long and hard about whether to upgrade my trusty 05 650 for one of the new fangled ones and decided I just can't afford it for a while.
So, to cheer myself up I'm going to deck it out with panniers but don't know which ones are reckoned to be the best.
I'm happy to buy new but would prefer used if anyone has anything suitable.
Any advice welcomed

When I bought my 2004 GS, I fitted Metal Mule panniers, which have been excellent, but the price has almost doubled since. Frames & 2 35 liter boxes are now over £1200!

These guys were at the London Bike Show, next to the lovely Lois Pryce, & seem to be making a good product at a more reasonable price:-

Givi do good Plastic luggage if you are not into the metal stuff, but as the bike has been out of production for 2 years now, the fitting kits are no longer in their catalogue, so sourcing the frames may be a problem (Ebay).

My vote would be to speak to the Vern(inator) at VND (Vern off this site).

His panniers are without a doubt the dogs conkers. If I could afford new panniers, I'd be buying the best, these are without doubt verns worldbeaters IMO.

Vern's a top bloke too, but don't drink the tea :pissl :D:D:D

i been using the bmw vario pannier for couple of years now, they do job fine,i like they way they just come off with no frames left

Zegas on ours!

We have Touratech Zega panniers on ours!

I have a 35 litre and a 29 litre on my 06 F650GS aswell as a Givi topbox(the panniers are off my HP2 and fit both bikes although they'reb a bit lop sided on the F650 but not so noticeable with a Scorpion can)

Mrs P has two 29 litre panniers on her 05 F650GS FL and a small rack bag.

Both bikes have the touratech Zega pannier racks which are very good rear 'crash bars' if the bikes ever fall over!

Verns boxes are as said the bee's The down side is that he may not make them for the 650gs single  Well worth giving him a ring to find out.

The ultimate panniers for the 650 single are the Al Jesse panniers. There low slung, 45 ltrs each and no wider than the bars. They are strong tough panniers that will easily take all the knocks of a few week on the road.

Again there is a down side. They are made in America and difficult to get hole of, though with persistence should be possible.

Alternatives mentioned above tend to stick out either side quite a lot, which IMO is a wast of space.

It's worth PM'ing 'The Civil one' He makes a set specifically for the 650.

at the end of the day they all do the same job.:thumb
if you are seriously going off road then Vern's etc would be great.

And in the same vein, my twopence worth - giving 4d in total now.
(and d means pennies as in pre decimal for the yoof amongst us)
I've got panniers, top box and tank bag and in 2 years I've yet to use the panniers as I can get everything in the topbox and the tankbag.
I easily manage a week with that combination but obviously I'm not a real hard traveller as I don't camp plus I travel light and have even been known to, shock horror keep it quiet please, do a bit of hand washing during my trips.
Edit - and I've just realised the very same top box is in my avatar.

got a set of pelican cases on mine. From caribou cases There's quite a few options ranging from a full setup supplied by them to a diy kit to fit pelican cases to givi, hepco becker and sw motech evo racks.

Mine have been great so far, totally waterproof :thumb2 Each pannier is 35 litre btw

The Givi stuff is fine and there's lots of it for sale on e-bay. Good value.:thumb2

I think that if you really want the BEST, go for the Overland Solutions ones. I used them on a trip to Oz and they are very solid and well put together. See mine here: http://www.planitearth.co.uk/BikePanniers.htm

I'll second that. :thumb2 I used them for my RTW and they took a few tumbles including a 30mph ejection on wet tar  in Ecuador. They are tough and were never broken into either, despite at least one attempt in South Africa. If you are interested you can see the ones I used on the Travellers section under Mike & John's RTW Adventure.

...in fact, I'll do better than that.

Here's a shot of mine with some reinforced plates(around the outside front edges) that Ernie(Of Overland Solutions) made up for me after my spill in Ecuador..and then sent them out to me in Peru. The accident didn't distort the shape of the panniers at all but did grind off a few mm's on the front edge, hence the re-inforcing plates. Some service eh. :thumb2

(For those of you wondering where the bike photo was taken, it was on a barge in Bolivia shortly after leaving Peru).
