Hello,
My wheels have a considerable amount of road tar/insects/dust etc caked on.
I've tried normal car shampoo stuff, as well as Muc-Off. It got rid of some of the stuff, but I now want to get rid of the caked on stuff.

Any recommendations? I did search, but there's a lot of threads with 'cleaning' and 'wheels' in the title!

"Bilt Hamber Auto Wheel" https://www.reflectautocare.ie/Bilt-Hamber-Auto-Wheel.
This is the type of cleaner I use with great success and was recommended by a mate who cleans and details bikes for a living. Obviously you might not be able to get this exact product in New Zealand but I would suggest you look for something similar with the same properties that won't end up damaging the wheel surface.
Hope this hepls

Warm soapy water and a brush .. honestly .. chemicals may strip off the wheel paint or colours. Enjoy but be careful.

Take them off the bike & give them to your partner to clean :D

Also Bilt Hamber turns pink when it has reacted and lifted all the dirt etc. I have used in on all types of wheels and as I said my mate uses it on all the wheels that come through his bike cleaning business

The best thing ever invented in my opinion is Autoglyms G101 just check out its reviews.

White spirit is pretty good for removing road tar.

It’s what I use, cheap, available and doesn’t damage the anodising or metal......:)

It's what I use for cleaning up manky bicycle drive train components. As you say, very effective, doesn't seem to harm anything and much cheaper than dedicated auto cleaning products.

Weird but I found aerosol de-icer works well for cleaning road dirt off wheels, engine etc.

That sounds like good advice .. especially as you say it does NOT anodise anything :) I always feared my wheels would be turned grey or just loose their original appeal. I shall give it a go !!!

We sell colour active wheel cleaners in various brands and they are overall the best for cooked on bike dust n metal debris... They are basically"iron off" cleaners for removing metal particles from paint and have been very successfully rebranded as wheel cleaners... If you have ever seen painted alloy wheels where the driver has worn the pads to the metal or those who only clean the car at the end of the 3 year PCP you will know what I mean...😉

For tar there are good tar off products... Wd40 works well and some use petrol etc... I on the other hand use tar as extra protection...🤣
