best mountain pass between italy and switzland

hi all

may this year take a train from dussledorf to alessandria.

then will travel to lake garda then lake como,looking for any help on the best mountain pass you know all the twist and turns snow on the peaks not the road,high and lake roads,
any help welcome

It's quite a good way to get about

It's not particularly cheap but by the time you have subtracted fuel, probably an overnight hotel somewhere, tyre wear etc. etc. etc. it ain't so bad...

last year we travelled through 10 counties.
so this year an over night train from dussledorf 600 euros private cabin for two with shower ,toilet etc and the bike travels behind you in seperate part of the train,save on fuel and hotels and in 15 hours we are in north italy

To answer the original question, my favourite pass between Switzerland and Italy is undoubtedly the Nufenen. But so much depends on the weather when you ride them that soemoen else may well have an entirely different view.

The Nufenen is also handily placed for several other Swiss passes - Grimsel, Susten, Furka, Oberalp...

Seriously, you have two to choose from:

Grand St Bernard

Splugen Pass

There are also

Simplon Pass

Stelvio

Umbrail

but none of them have the pass summit at the border.

The Swiss/Italian border is at the top of the Umbrail pass

The border is the dotted line. I wouldn't want to ride down the Umbrail pass though as the haipin bends are ridiculously tight towards the bottom. It does have a short stretch of gravel road though

Agree with you on the Umbrail. Ride it North to South.

Well, blow me down. I rode over this a few years ago and I was convinced I made a brief excursion into Italy. Seems I didn't. (I may have been getting confused with popping into Italy across the Petit St Bernard.)

Well in a way you did as you went into Ticino which is the Italian speaking area of Switzerland.

Going there in July, may change our planned direction to North to South then

Try the Tremala pass which shadows the Gottard pass main road, although both are great on bike, watch out for the stage coach which still runs every day in the summer and the horses shite ,canny slippy

we went down the pass on the "swiss tossers on tour" there was cow shite on every bend. tho would hardly ssay the bends were tight
