Best phone SatNav app

Sat navs are great at sat naving. Phones are great at phone stuff. Neither is very good at the other.

Google Maps or Waze (Google Maps owns Waze)

No other app does live traffic like these guys

Google Maps works perfectly overseas and seeing as most mobile contracts still give you roaming all the live traffic data also works as normal (or just get a local sim)

I'm now running the Sygic app on my phone and Android Auto on the Aoocci. I used it years ago on a PDA (remember them?). It allows users to update much like Waze but has far less cluttered screen. It also uses downloaded maps as well as live date so no problem if you loose signal. Lots of personalisation possible but mainly aimed at cars with dashcam and HUD feature.
I find it good for simple journeys but not used it on a major preplanned route yet,
Worth a look.

How did you find the search function on Sygic.

I used it years ago on the old N series Nokia's

I recently installed it and payed for the premium annual license.

I wasn't able to successfully search a destination in the app.

I really want it to work.....because I think Google are going to completely assimilate Waze this year......and ruin it.

Sygic is far more "grown up" looking.

Download Pocket Earth Pro to your ageing iPhone 7 and forget all about vibration issues screwing the camera auto stabilisation. If it rains stick a plastic bag over it or stow it and follow your mate. As long as you have no need to re-route or create a new route when away from wifi you don’t even need a SIM card in it

If you are thinking of an upgrade before you leave then put the 7 on the bars and the new one in your pocket where it can hotspot mobile data to the oldie

The app is excellent, with contours available and of course the be all and end all of easy route planning ie rubber banding

And of course planning can be done on an iPad before being uploaded to the phone

It just works

I found the search OK but have never had a lot of success searching satnavs, I gave up on my Nav V which defies logic! I have a built in system in my car which is next to useless trying to find locations so Sygic is an improvement on those and they've now incorporated 'What three words' into it as well. The maps are TomTom I believe.

The look of Waze is too cluttered with all of those faces and symbols and it doesn't seem to be very clear with Android Auto.

It can be frustrating just make sure you have the maps loaded for the area you are searching.

Waze can be tidied up in the settings. You don't need to see all the other users.....that can be switched off.

I think some people get a little overly hung-up with the whole redundancy thing here.

I'm about to jump from my stand-alone Garmin to a Aoocci thing as I want to use the convenience of Apple Car Play for navigating, music, phone etc.

I'm not planning on keeping the Garmin mounted on the bike.

I have some redundancy with the BMW (un)Connected App sh1t that I could try using in a dire emergency on a big trip.

However, I always take a map book with me.

There are things called road signs.

Funnily enough, the world managed to cope with travel before GPS, phones and electronics were all pervading.

The way some people on here talk about having a stand-alone, dedicated GPS device in addition to your phone-mirroring screen thing is enough to make you think that your air-supply will run out should you have the misfortune of temporarily losing the ability to electronically navigate.

Chill out!

Sat nav’s are very useful for the first and last miles when you’re in towns etc that you don’t know well. Once out on the more open road there are signposts giving directions and very basic knowledge of North, south etc.
