Is there a make of external hard drive that stands out as being more reliable/built to a higher standard than others? Or are they all pretty much the same? I'm thinking along the lines of around 120GB, USB2 and portable. Any recommendations?

Just bought a LaCie 120GB. OK so far. I suspect that they're all much of a muchness.
Important of course to get one which is USB powered rather than having a power lead.
I think some of them will come with bundled backup software. I've also got a Maxtor Onetouch which I bought for this reason, but I don't use the software any more cos it was too complicated and clunky.

Another vote for LaCie here.

I've got a Firewire version, very good, try Dabs.co.uk

Another vote for Western Digital - I've got the 250Gb 'My Book' (Amazon I think...about £60). Works great.:thumb

Very compact, USB connection, easy-peasy set-up.

I've had a Seagate for a couple of years now and had no bother at all. V easy to set up etc.,
