Can anyone understand or explain this little fact from the Irish Times?

Luxury car market still in good health
JOHN COLLINS

So what do you think was the best selling new car in Ireland last month? The modest Toyota Yaris? The functional Volkswagen Golf? The ever-reliable Ford Fiesta?

Not a bit of it. While all those models sold well, it was actually the 5-series BMW – with a price tag of between about €42,000 and well over €100,000 depending on model and configuration – that was the best selling model. Analysis of the car registration figures by Motorcheck.ie shows that 350 of these luxury cars were registered in July. In comparison the second place model, the Toyota Yaris, managed just 198 registrations.

While the vast majority of people are still feeling the economic downturn the figures clearly show there is a sizeable minority of people out there who are still doing very well.

I seen those figures all right. Makes you think. Or is there sonething else going on here?
Most BMW cars are orderd for delievery with up to 3 months or more waiting time for delievry. A lot of these cars would have been sold in May June and July and maby a few off the floor in August. Some odd balls might be March and April cars that were delayd for some reason or other. For example a disagreement over vrt with costoms officals may delay cars further. I worked in a BMW garage a few years ago and while I dont work in the motor trade any more that was the way it was then and I havent herd about any changes. Also I think credit may be becomeing more avaibable. I know two people who got credit reciently in circumstances whare they thought they would not.
I think its good to see things moving again and maby a bit of an upturn is on the way.

its very simple bin, i see it every day, its all about saving the planet.
a bmw 520d diesel car comes into band b for emmisions which means 154 euro road tax and most people use the savings on road tax to justify spending thousands more on a car
plus some credit is available now but a lot of people wont be getting credit for quite a few years after the hardship of the last few years
or as someone said recently some people who always had money stil have it and those who never had money are fxxked altogether:rob

All smaller cars would be bought privately and people are stock so not many selling. The bigger cars are still been bought as executive cars. Companies have fleet contracts with the likes of BMW for these cars year after year, they will still get a new car but they only hold it about a year or two and BMW take it back and give them a new one. See what BMW have in their second hand car lot in 2011 and 12 and you more then lightly see most of the three and odd 5 series cars as them are owned by BMW themselves.

And, I'm told the lower spec 5 series or Merc E-class is now priced at what a lower spec 3 series or C-class was a few years ago.
Maybe, people are trading up a class for that reason and the cheap tax. :nenau

Perhaps there are a few bandits from Limerick estates and well travelled people trading up :augie
