Hi,

I’m not sure if this is the right place for this post, if not, Moderators please move it.

I am after some advice please on the best treatment for leather gore-tex boots. I have heard that some treatments to the leather block the pores and are detrimental to the breathability of the gore-liner.

Any advice greatly appreciated, many thanks.

The stuff from Altberg has not caused any problems with my Daytonas to look after the leather

I also use the stuff you can get from Daytona just to smarten them up which if you think about it must be ok

When we were issued with GoreTex jackets in the RAF, we were told not to get oil or grease near them as it destroys the breathability. We worked on the C130 flight line at Lyneham at the time where we spent all of the time covered in oil and grease.
I bought a set of BMW GoreTex leather gloves for £85 in 2001. I have treated them so many times with neatsfoot oil to keep them soft. They are still waterproof and are my everyday riding gloves.

Another vote for Ledergris here. Use it on all my leather boots, and never had an issue with it affecting waterproofing.

i use standard leather conditioner and clear wax (jojo) on my daytonas - never had a problem.

Same process for gloves, and leather trousers.

Reading the QandA it appears it could block goretex linings and refers to nubuck - who knows

With regards to the boots - do you think the products will absorb enough to soak through to the liner?

I do not think so - use sparingly - wipe it off as you go and there is no way it can penetrate the 1 to 2mm of leather which has been treated in the past with a waterproofing product.

For the last 15 years I have been using a 50/50 mixture of black boot polish and Mars oil with a small amount of black leather dye added.
I have used this on my goretex/leather gloves,Daytona goretex boots and leathers. It keeps the leather black and supple and covers scuffs also keeps some water resistance on non waterproof leather gloves. I have never had any issue with the effectivness of the goretex, it still out performs any other waterproof systems I have tried and seems to be the most durable.
Apply with a sponge, leave to soak in then buff off with an old towel.
When treating gloves it is easiest to put them on to do it, them you can massage it in between the fingers more easily.

Grangers Waterproofing Wax. Grangers are the partner of choice for Goretex cleaning products for the likes of Arcteryx etc.

This is what I use for my Daytona Roadstar boots and AlpineStar Toucans from E- Bay less than £10... never had any problems with either pairs, both are Gortex.

As above in conjunction with the Daytona Aqua Stop works well, no leaks and supple leather

+ 1 we should not use oils and waxes, what happens is over time the oils /waxes migrate to the GorTex and this will eventually stop it from breathing . My Daytona boots cost me £300 don’t fancy ferking them up but I must say they’re very good boots.

So daytona tell you to use it

The leather used in most bike boots is pigmented (picture of pink leather) or oiled, you can put olive oil on would not make any difference. However there are stitching's, that's what the Gore is covering up from the inside to make the boot waterproof. How do I know that? I have a hand held microscope to ID type of leather. Vegetable dyed, Nubuck and fully aniline type leather will "breathe". Second picture you can see the hair follicles and cracks.
Clean the boots, you can use boot polish or any of the products mentioned above. I personally avoid the stitching's on my boots.

+1 for the Daytona products. I use them on my Daytona boots and Rukka Apollo gloves and never had any issues.
This multi-pack from E-bay is what I ordered when I bought my Daytona boots, a bargain I thought as opposed to individual items. Obviously the zip grease is only of use if you have Daytona's.
