Best way to pick it up?

Decided to practice lifting my ADV on the lawn the other day with luggage both on and off. Back towards the bike with one hand on rear grab handle and other hand on the handlebars is deffo the easiest way to lift the bike by far. A lot easier than I expected.

I tried to do as per one of the vids in this thread, as in facing bike and just grabbing the handlebar seriously hard work with a high risk of back injury in my view. Won't use that technique again.

could you do it all again, video it and post a link :)

I've tried both techniques, used the bum in the seat method with my 1100RS and tried the pointing the wheel at the air technique on the ORS mini-course at Knockhill last year.

I think the longer bars on the GS might help with leverage - just make sure you keep your back straight and lift with your legs.

The added fun with my old RS is that the air box is connected up to the engine breather system - if you have oil in there then it will run down the intake tube and the engine will smoke for a while till it clears.

Ooh, that's a bit technical for me but the technique is identical to the reply 5 in this thread which shows a girl lifting a Goldwing. You literally sit on the side of the seat, back towards bike, use grab handle on one side and handlebar on other side and just stand up/walk backwards at the same time while keeping you back straight. Your legs do all the work and it's really easy as per another previous post. Think the idea of ensuring bike is in first gear is a good one as that stops any rolling away when you stand it up. Deffo recommend practising under controlled conditions at home so when you do drop it for real, you know exactly what to do. :thumb2

If you really want a Vid, I will give it a go.

Surprised myself by working out how to embed this vid in this post. Took this vid this morning.

Excellant, has given me confidence as I've had to ask for help before! Where did you get the right hand side stand:blast

if you are on any kind of slope or a slippery surface do NOT try to lift with your back to the bike.

Do it this way

How to pick up a bike: You could try:

"Vision from heaven"
or:
"Sweetness of the night"

But in my experience, bikes are very hard of hearing, and unlikely to respond.

I just had a few goes at this technique in the garden and I find it really hard. Perhaps there's a knack to doing it but for me it was at least twice as difficult compared to the back to the bike technique. I don't really do proper muddy stuff on the Adv so it's not that relevant but I will keep trying and maybe it will become easier.

Blobby, well done. i've only ever had to do it twice, and neither time did it seem thast effortless.

Took me a while to work out what you were on about with the "right hand side stand". I was using my laptop cam hence, as you gathered, it's the mirror image.

Glad the vid helped a bit and apologies for the poor quality but it served the purpose. :thumb2
