After the Tesco fuel scare i decided to try a tank of Esso`s Super Unleaded, 97 octane i think.

My bike seems to be running reeeeeal nice !!!:bounce1

03 1150 GSA.

You might find that it just runs normally now you've got a 'proper' brand of fuel!

The thing about higher octane (ron) fuel is that it doesnt do anything in terms of a faster/brighter/cleaner burn - its just a measurement of how easily the fuel can detonate.

Therefore, if you use a lower ron value fuel, you're more likely to suffer from 'pinking' or pre-detonation (i.e. the fuel detonates before spark ignites = bad thing).

This is generally more aggrevated by high performance fuel injected/super charged models as the higher pressures increase the temperature of the fuel etc.

Higher ron fuels do not have any additional calorific value, therefore you wont get any more power to your bang.

This probably wont mean much, but I do notice an increase in performance if I use shell over morrisons fuel. I tend to get a good 20 more miles per tank of petrol, and generally just feels less twinny and more inline 4'y - probably to do with the additives used rather than octane or 'higher performance' fuels on offer.

Ive ever only used Shell Optimax or BP Ultimate. Cleaner engine me:D even on the mainland, i use the better fuel.

I use any old crap...it makes no difference apart from 5p a litre :nenau

The GS is a tractor, not an Evo 8....

so...if there is no more bang for my pound, why do i get about better fuel economy from higher octane fuel?

Wiki says higer ron fuel does have a higher calorific value....

All i really know is that it filling up with Sainsburys 98RON fuel at about 2p/l more expensive saved me money versus their 95RON.

higher octane means it's less prone to detonation, so an intelligent ECU can advance the timing, to get more power.

a 1200 can do this, an 1150 can't.

couldn't tell the difference in my 1150 or my 12, so i'm with fanum & use any old crap.

Can't tell the difference on the 1200, but I know it made a huge difference on the Volvo V70R I ran a year or so back. The full 300bhp only from 98 fuel. On 95, official power was 283. And you could feel the difference. :D No other car/bike I have driven/ridden felt any different!

.

The GS doesn't qualify as any of those - it's a bus engine.

I can definately tell the difference - my (1150) has always been prone to pinking - both in summer when it's hot and in winter when the fuel is shite. I can almost completely eliminate the pinking if I use Shell V-Power - no difference in performance although it does seem a bit smoother. Don't notice any difference in consumption either although I'm far from scientific about logging it. It has been a constant, OCD-inducing source of annoyance to me that in order for my bike not to pink, I have to use poncey petrol.

On the other hand if needs be and you ride according - it'll run for extended periods on sub 80 ron fuel too..... :nenau

so you're using the 98RON to mask a fault. shouldn't need to :nenau

I know. It's driven me half mad in the past. I've tried everything in the book about 7 times to try to sort it - and nothing stops it for long. [ Should point out that when I say it pinks, I usually have to induce it by whacking the throttle right open under load, so it's not bad pinking, but it still shouldn't be there ]. I've read up endlessly on Advrider (even considered trying what they call 'water-torture') where they seem to suffer from it worse than we do, and the concensus seems to be that some bikes are worse than others and that it may be down to differing tolerances when the bikes are put together in the factory - slightly different positioning of the Hall Sensor, that sort of thing.... certainly my last GS didn't do it. Anyway I had 'got over it' and now you've got me all fired up on it again *twitch twitch* :P

Maybe your timing is a bit too far advanced.Heres a check-out/adjustment procedure i found on ADVrider.

Octains

In Calfornia petrol starts at 81 , 83, somtmes 95 n/a, have run my 1150 and others also have run on 81or 83, slight loss of power but NO pinking.
(and it was cheep). Also ticked over normally at 14760ft. (Mt.Evans , Colarado).
dave ( low octain) GS.
