I have had an oil leak from the Bevel Drive on my R80g/s 1983.
It appeared to be from the large oil seal.
The unit was reconditioned and refitted but still leaked from the seal.
A second reconditioned unit has been fitted but appears to be leaking from the same place.
In total I am now on my fourth set of brake shoes, all contaminated.
Has anyone had a similar issue?

I’ve posted a reply on FB for you. Are you sure it’s not coming from the brake shoe operating shaft? This happened to my G/S and is an easy fix. Later models had the shaftway fully sealed relying on assembly grease for lubrication.

I had a leak through the brake shaft (from the lever to the shoe pivot)

As said, the newer ones have a tube that the shaft goes through, which stops the oil passing through from the drive bit to the brake bit.

Have a word with Mikeyboy, he should be able to sort this for you.

Thanks for your reply. I had seen it on ‘face ache’.
We are going to have to wait until next Tuesday before we strip it and will bear your comments in mind.re the brake pivot shaft.
I find it hard to believe that the leak on the original bevel Drive was replicated once it had been reconditioned and then again on a replacement unit. I am gutted!

I had someone try to fix mine by putting another 'O' ring on the shaft.

Some folk will try to keep it 'original' despite it being a design flaw. The sleeve sorts it, I believe it can be made out of an old push rod tube, but I may be mistaken.

Just an update...recon casing fitted with new tube, still leaking around tube!
Getting really p’d off now.....

Make sure that the breather is clear, otherwise pressure will build and push the oil out . . somewhere :thumb.

Bob.

^This. given the amount of times and with supposedly reconditioned units I would also be looking at other outside influences. Its been a while since I delved into my 1983 g/s's transmission line, but I seem to recall if you have a catastrophically overfilled monolever tube and/or final drive this can also cause leakage. For peace of mind check your gearbox breather also as its possible gearbox oil might be making its way into the mono tube and overfilling it.

Hi, had the same problem on my g/s, I had two bushes in the final drive unit where the brake arm goes through. This can be changed for a single sleeve upgraded part, you will need to seal the new longer sleeve with a quality sealant.
Make sure you allow 24 hours for the sealant to set.
Then use just 2 of the o rings on the shaft as any more create a bit too much stichion.
Pm if you want more details, fit new sleeve as readily avail.
The chances are no new sleeve was fitted when they reconditioned the final drive.
Let me know if you need pointers,
Steve

#1 on Steve's suggestion to use a sealant on the tube, and FWIW it doesn't get much of a mention anywhere else.DAHIK.
If you have the final drive apart a Loctite type product can be used to fit the tube to the main case, and it works OK on the cover too, but probably only until you have to pull the cover, hopefully 3/400,000 later.
I is also good for re fixing the end cap at the axle location, if you have removed it to facilitate setting the end float.

I recently had the original 2 bush setup fitted in my bevel box. Reasoning that it had lasted for god knows how many years before failing, and would be easier to get the box apart if it ever needed a seal changing.

Just picked up my bike with my original Bevel Drive refurbished and refitted, touch wood all ok.
Thanks to Roy at RGM for his patience, service, and determination to see it right.

Well done, did Roy explain what he did to cure it?
Always good to know.

Well.......sent the refurbished item back to the ‘Works’ told them to extract their digits and return my original item correctly refurbished to be fitted ASAP.
The 10 day turn round turned out to be more like 10 weeks!
‘All’s well that ends well’ As I can get back out on the road and enjoy.....!
