Beware Touratechs New CRAP Hugger

pm'd you skip. No further updates as yet. I have a sneaky feeling they just hope we will get p****d o** and go away. :spitfire But that's not going to happen, is it? ;)

Was down at Touratech on Friday... spoke to Barry Maas.

Touratech are having top level meetings to discuss the problem, and how to bring to a satisfactory conclusion. No problems with getting your money back, and they are genuinely concerned with the damage caused.

Keep in touch with your supplier and they should be informed as to what to do with you!

A Mark III is being tested, with different and re-inforced materials, but similar fastening and shape.

Hope this helps folks....

Huggers etc

I am one of those simple minded folk who reckon that if huggers were necessary/safe/worthwile than BMW would offer one as an option. (Having said that I had Givi topcase fitted to my 1200GS and the mounting screw sheared off, which I now know is a common problem.) All my other bits added on are genuine BMW parts - also THAT does make a difference, I have found, when you trade a bike in.

Yes but no but

Agree in principle, but that's not to say that BMW make all the best accessories. I personally think their engine bars are not nearly as sturdy as Hepco bars. Only one example though, there are possibly more.

Also I have seen a GS hugger in the BMW showroom at North Oxford. It was a carbon fibre piece, so I guess they do make them or they are selling after market accessories by someone else.

My 2P worth.

Its seems that they talked about the "hugger from hell" issue during the Cologne show. I still don't have any feedback. If I don't get any news in the coming 2 weeks, I start a legal procedure. A noisy one.
Class action procedure does not exist in France, but I will find a way to contact other people with the same issue and share the legal costs with them.
Any news on your side ?

I think you'll find they're Ilmberger ones. I've one on my 1150 GSA and it's a nice bit of kit. They're also sold by Wunderlich, amongst others.

Williams in Manchester also sell Touratech bits and pieces as well.

I have to commute 100 miles a day on my GS12 and in a downpour, the amount of water/shite thrown at the back of my left leg and all over the rear of the bike really makes the ride quite unpleasant. I have had a wunderlich hugger fitted for 6 months now. I have had no problems with it and both myself and the bike appreciate the protection offered. I think the reason BMW don't offer a hugger is that it would clog with mud if the bike was taken off road. Apart from dry weather green laning, my bike is a pure road tool.

Off-road hugger

In this case, is there a preferred hugger you could also use off-road?

The demands for the part are high and a lot of customers were asking when they would finally get the their part. This resulted in a too short test. Now we have the first reports that the new model has problems as well.

Problem? I thought all GS product / accessory R&D was done by the owners. That'll cost TT an arm and a leg - well, er perhaps just a swingarm. Sounds like they were trying to strike while the market iron was hot, and now they are going to get burned. Ouch!

May be cynical, but everytime I've heard that kind of verbage, it usually means a stonewalling strategy or a damage limitation one.

I'd be well p*ssed off. Mick are you the ex-police motorcycle instructor that does on-road advanced training? Do you have another website? Sure I found one a little while back, but lost the URL. Maybe barking up the wrong tree. Thanks.

Just found the website Mick (http://www.advancedridingtechniques.info/), I'll be checking that out and will be in touch at some stage, may have left it a little late for this year, so perhaps next Spring. Will be in touch. Thanks.

no this one is different - the TT version is plastic.

Maybe!!!

Reeding the posts, the Touratech 'hugger' (at least one of them) seems to have been purchased through Nippy Norman - does anyone know if the one Nippy Norman sells now is related to the Touratech item?
and, if not, what is the collective feedback on the Nippy Norman item?

I bought my TT ones from Nippy. In fact I bought both versions from him. No problem with a refund though (well, as soon as I can be arsed to post them back to him).

First one was useless and rotated onto the wheel. Revised version frctured within a couple of hundred miles like everyone else's. Both of them scuffed up the swingarm. TT say the will sort out the damage (respray the swingarm) but I am not confident they actually mean it yet. :nenau

It's a real shame though and going by the quality of the material used and the look of the thing I thought it was a good bit of kit. Just poor design and testing perhaps.

Nippy probably has alternatives to the TT one though so I am sure he will sort you out.

Skip.
