The 50's style headlamp of the Road King is one of it's most distinguishing features. Not only is it a unique styling clue around which the whole bike is based, but a very effective luminaire for the road ahead. Today is the shortest day(light) of the year, so, yesterday I enjoyed a ride to Nashpoint lighthouse, followed by a very welcome pint of HPA (Hereford Pale Ale- I have got a thing about Pale Ales at the mo), at the nearby fourteenth century public house, The Plough and Harrow.

Pictures like that make me regret selling my RoadKing. Are the panniers stretched ? It looks lovely.

Hi Luke, they are deeper than the standard hard panniers, mostly for effect, but it does mean I can fit a small tripod and lighting stand in one, as the diagonal is quite long.

I now, truly appreciate Att's phrase that he coined....." Death by Nigel". I too, shall adopt that as my tag line.....

Nope...your're missing the point. I like the photograph. You certainly have an eye for composition. It was the drivel about a " unique styling clue" I was referring to..... For fuck's sake. It's a Harley.....

So what would you call it? It is the headlight style that sets the design of the rest of the bike, a nod to 1950's American motorcycle design. Even Harleys get designed, and if that is to poncy for you, tough luck, it is a fact. As for drivel...........I don't think I have the exclusive on that!

"William G. Davidson, better known as Willie G., is the grandson of William A. Davidson, one of the original founders of Harley-Davidson. Willie G. is best known for shaking up the staid design department at Harley-Davidson with new and innovative ideas that helped usher in a new era for the Milwaukee-based company. He was part of the group of employees that bought the troubled company back from AMF and helped guide it to financial health during the 1980s.

Davidson, naturally, grew up around motorcycles. He remembers as a young child the excitement of being given rides in the sidecar of the motorcycle his father was riding. Davidson graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a degree in graphic art and then attended the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California.

While in California, Davidson discovered the burgeoning world of motorcycle customizing, which would become a major influence in his later designs. After his education, Davidson worked in the design department of several automobile companies, including Ford. During this period, he began designing custom motorcycles as a hobby."

You may be right about the headlight Jonathan. That along with the uncluttered handlebar and speedometer on the tank has been a Harley tradition for a long time.
Nostalgia and styling are really what Harley is about and the Road King is arguably their best example of this, along with some of the Dynas and Sportsters.

Absolutely...but you couldn't call "sticking with a look that works" "design"...could you?. Modern Harleys are not designed...they are merely copies of their older versions with the oddd nod towards modern requirements.....like suspension.:D

Not exactly a new design is it?

I certainly couldn't.

LOL absolutely not a new design, look to KTM for that. FL’s began in the 40's but the design wasn’t “all new” even then. Road Kings are simply the modern version of old Duo Glide and Electra Glide (before the batwing), like this 1965 Electra Glide.

Strangely enough I have just spent all day in the studio with a product designer shooting some of the products he has designed. I couldn't bring myself to mention the fact that some don't think things are designed, it is the poor blokes life's work. Not even vaguely important in the grand scheme of things, but important non the less. Evolutionary design, is usually the result of success. Apple don't change their designs substantially, as many of their products are design icons( that other manufacturers copy). VW has continually carefully redesigned the Golf, so it is not significantly different to the last model, as evolutionary design keeps the previous model desirable and a good bet at resale time. A 10 year old Golf still looks really good. Harley, dare I say it, have been very clever. Classic lines, and with the latest models half decent handling, braking and modern technology. I think Harleys' Design Department is doing a good job. That new Road Glide with it's twin headlamps has moved the design on from the 50's to the 70's- I love it!

Thanks Melch, the only time the air filter got quite wet was when I was cleaning it yesterday with lots of cold water, but it started and ran fine. I will get a sock for it anyway as the novelty doesn't seem to be wearing off anytime soon. Thanks for the BMW type socket on the side panel by the way,it is perfect for my heated jacket- bring on the cold weather.
