Been reading a few posts about bikes going over 100K, over working in the states and one of the lads was telling me about his pal who has a 2009 Trumpet Rocket thats just clocked 240K miles. So any ideas what the biggest miles have been recorded on a GS and if its been mostly road miles.

If looked after properly then these engines should be capable of mega miles you would think??

Just that having a 2012 GSA with only 12K on it and serviced myself since 2K im keen to know what the main things are to look out for in trying to keep it running nice..

I would say that regular changes with a good quality oil would be the main one. Don't ask me which one. It's another emotive subject around here!
Believe I read about a K100 with over 400k miles and a Harley with over a million miles. The Harley was totally worn out and HD swapped it for a new one as a publicity stunt.
Another forum member recently posted a pic of his odo at the 100,000 and it took me a minute to remember it was in kilometers.

Mines at 135,000 miles and is as good now as it's ever been.

Remember they are fairly lightly stressed motors so there is no reason why they shouldn't do mega mileage and I've seen a few stateside with 150 plus.

They will do whatever miles you want them to after throwing enough parts at them. To be fair on the Hexhead engines it is rarely the engine that will stop the bike it is everything else round it.

There's one in Lincoln with 160,000 + on, and a member on here!

Sure in a few months a kilometer will be worth more than a mile!!!!

68k and still riding. Engine's ok it's some of the other bits that are starting to wear out. Just fitted Wilbers ESA to replace the worn out shocks; 2 x rears (30K and 66k) and the original front shock (66k). New rear disc soon required as its below the wear limit; fronts gettign towards the wear limit. Both fork seals starting to weep a little oil.

In the classified section of Motorcycle Sport & Leisure mag a few months back. 660,000 miles on a 1997 Gs1100.

Yep, keep the oil topped up and replaced when it should be and the engines seem to last.
160,000 on mine. I stripped it down last year to repaint, so I did mains big-ends, and cam chains. That was because I did not want to have to strip it down again. Nothing was really worn, but having got that far no point in reusing old bearings.
You need to keep an eye final drives and the UJs on the drive shaft. MikeyBoy has a job for life reconditioning worn out units...
They seem to suffer more from nit being used than they do from covering mileage. Springtime there will be the usual round of dead batteries and final drive bearings worn out.

Mine has just gone over 60K miles. The alternator has recently started to squeak so will need replacing soon.
The gearbox input shaft rattles but unless it gets worse, it can wait until the clutch needs replacing.
I've noticed more driveline backlash. Maybe that's a sign. But gear shifts are fine and there's no gear noise.
It will be wise to consider new cam chains and guides but they sound fine so who knows how long they'll actually last.

That about sums it up. Keep em running and they are as good and if not better than anything else.

Job permitting and not being away from home then i plan to keep mine running as much as i can. Poor bike has stood for a few months this year since June due to work.

Lots of ACF 50 especially in hidden places like alternator and engine top.

The guy pictured below is Nick Palmer. He's on his sixth trip up to Nordkapp on his 1986 BMW R80/GS. That bike has covered 430,000miles. Amazing really. He shipped it over from North Carolina in the US. He's a very cool old dude. Be like Nick Palmer.

It's not a R1200 I know.
