Hi Guys
Just wanted to know what sort of problems you guys encountered while putting on a few miles on your GSA?
Mine (09) just got over the 65000m mark and so far she has been good to me.Unlike my first one which ate a final drive every 13000m:eek: (still managed to put 52000 on her)
I am determined to put at least 100000m on her, propably more unless i win the lottery:rolleyes: not talking obviously about the normal consumables, just the proper expensive stuff:eek:

Thanks Pete

Pete, the biggest problem I've had is that I haven't had the time to do biggish mileage. '11 plate GSA 13K - the brain computer (can't remember the real name) under the tank packed in inexplicably last summer, which is rare apparently. Aside from that nothing of any note. Looking forward to putting many more miles on it in the near future, it's a keeper whatever happens because I like it so much and prefer it to the LC's I've tried on a few occasions.

07 1200GS 84k, had it from new so all the miles are mine. Nothing major so far, Still on original front discs and pads.
Other than recall work it's been very reliable.

Cheers Dave.

My 47k on my old 09 looks a bit feeble in this company.....no problems other than rear shock spunking the oil all over the place...fixed through a rebuild for £135 inc postage. Oh...and the fuel strip gave out...gave up and used the trip instead....other than that ran sweet as a nut.

A couple things:

Drive shaft UJ failed - my bike gets offroaded, so not surprising really.
Alternator finally gave up the ghost.
Annoying but cheap fix - oil temp sensor, which leads to an oil leak.

My bike is 96k miles old, gets used year round and frequently left outside. It's done great as far I'm concerned :thumb2

As Mav said, you'll get wear in the FD UJ's and worth getting those checked out.

At 120,000 mine has been excellent to be honest. I get the FD rebuilt every couple of years by Mikeboy because I do not want a sudden failure in the ass end of nowhere on one of my trips. I had an occasional bit of blue smoke on hot start up so replaced the rings exhaust andinlet valves but more through precaution.

Ive got a bit of wear/corrosion in the front brake caliper pistons so will get them rebuilt this spring.

Mine isn't a garage queen and has suffered the usual corrosion issues on the front engine cover and rear subframe but had then re powder cated last year so they should be good now for the duration. It's worth keeping a close eye on that.

I change all the oils and filters every 6000 miles without fail.

I want mine to go to 200k so keep a close eye on things but I don't expect anything major to be failing.

Sweet
Thanks for the reply guys
Yeah mine is a all year round bike plus a bit off road occasionally and loook accordingly
I am not too worried about the cosmetic stuff just wondered what the big ticket items could be
I got the usual failures like fuel strip but cant be bothered to have it fixed,i got a trip meter so thats fine.
Couple of annoying things i had was the original left hand heated rip go and the rear right indicator. Since i was not prepared to pay bmw to fix it and put original stuff on (££££) i got now botched Oxford grips on it and 2 left rear indicators(couldnt for the life of me find a right hand indicator for decent money on ebay). She looks a bit wonkie from the rear but hey it works.

Thanks guys:thumb

There is a few high mileage bikes on here. As Mav and Sgt said. Suspension needs to be done every 20K to 30K to keep em in good condition. Check the telelever bearings and the ball joints at the A-arm and headstock. Your brake lines if not of the braided type you can change them for after market items. Just keep on top of the calipers. If yours is a red GSA, no need to change. That is the best colour.

On ADVrider there is a thread about changing and/or replacing the heated grips. That was some time ago and I just glanced over the article.

The heated grips are all sorted just wasnt prepared to pay BMW prices
Mine is even better than just red,she is a undercover red one ;)

Got my 06 ADV at 17k in 2009, now got 65k. In the first 18 months had every problem going, FD, ABS unit, gear position sender, leaking gearbox input oil seal. Since then I have had another FD rebuild, a shock rebuild that went west so replaced with Maxton. I have recently had a TPS. Engine still doesn't use oil and I service myself religiously every 6k or less. It's used two up and carried all sorts of things on holiday. It isn't mollycoddled either, it's used hard and hardly gets washed. The front engine cover is peeling plus I can't get crap off the rear wheel and the paint is a Bit flaky. It's patina and part of the bike. Have thought long and hard about a twin cam or a WC but as soon as I get back on it I love it again. The only thing I have never had is a fuel pump controller, I have kept a spare with me since I bought it.

Apart from a new battery every couple of years, sod all has gone wrong with mine.

2006 GS, 44k on the clock

Brill thread and respect guys :rob

3rd Twin Cam...on the last of the Twin cams (90th Anni) only 22K in 19 months but deffo going to 100K, love story's of the high milers :thumb2

Just another quick question.
Is mine the only one eating fron light bulps? Had another one go today,i recon i use about one every 7-8 month

Buy Halford's Heavy Duty H7s - they're not more powerful just built stronger.

...and.. owned from new 2004 GS ... ABS pump failed at 90 miles, had a gearbox seal, centre stand and 2 front engine plates under warranty.... regard FPC as a consumable item and carry a spare (I'm on no.4)...they go every 3-4 years... Continental Trail Attacks are the tyres for the road.
Replaced the battery 2 years ago because I was flush... oh! starter button vanished, replaced with a Motorworks 2nd hand one and subsequently a Titanium one from Oberon Performance :spank

Pair of Nitron shocks fitted last year :spank

..about 80,000 miles, I think

With the mild weather might have to have a ride tomorrow..

:beerjug:
