On the 1150 adventure rack it says max 5kg & i just got a new battery for the gs which is 6 kg
Is it just me who thinks they are being a bit reserved on how much load it will take

Same on the 1200 - bleedin' joke, 5kg is sweet FA. I carry me tools in my top box and I suspect when fully loaded it's a bit more than 5kg :augie

Guess it's just to cover themselves in these litigious times.

Here is a pic of my KLV loaded up with army kit on the way to a training exercise. It didnt handle too well, but then neither with you with 80kilos in kit shoved on the back willy nilly. Had around 60 of that in the top box and resting on top of it. Rack was rated to 8 kilos i think.

Manufacturers are always trying to protect themselves from idiots who through their own fault, break something or injure themselves then try to blame it on someone else

My top box was mounting straight onto the rack on the 1150gs and have had well over 20 kilos in it.

Number in the lift syndrome.

The sign says maximum of 6 people in the lift but it's actually strong enough to take 9.
Wide safety margins to cover manufacturers arses & to be well within the limits of H&S.

Obviously, don't take the piss and strap a small block shevvy engine on the back, but I think you might get away with the battery.

If nothing else, Good excuse for hoisting the front end up, with ease, off the lights.
Nothing like a good bit of ballast.

Don't worry your little socks off about it.

I've had an 1150 engine on the back of my bike. The only problem was trying to get off the bike as i couldn't put it on the side stand as it would have toppled over :blast, and have you tried getting off a bike with an engine on the back .

:eek::clap Quality.

I've seen things like mountain bikes lashed to the back of GS' but I think you've set the bench mark for weight on a rack so far.

I've enough trouble getting off mi GS with the usual tent & going away gubbins, and that's with lanky pins like mine, let alone an engine.

With the 1200 being lighter than the 1150, you could start a recovery business.

it was easy lifting it on the bike and strapping it down while the bike is on the center stand. You then get on the bike and ride it off the stand, not really thinking about what happens at the other end when you stop - easy, you just put the side stand down and get off as normal :blast.

Wrong. The bike will tip over. So you try to get off while balancing the bike. Simple - Oh yeh, try it with an engine on the back. 3% off vertical and the bike will go over, you won't be able to hold it once it starts to go and you'll end up with a leg underneth ...

So kept my finger on the horn until the neighbour came out and held/balanced it while i got off - Don't know how long i'd have been there if he hadn't have been in :D:D

Your neighbours must love you Neil.

A pity they didn't take a photo first.

So you'll be carrying a spare battery in the topbox then :augie

Had my battery fail at the shropshire bash :( so had a new one posted out & just noticed it was 6kg, 1kg more than the bmw think i should put on the rack  just put it in prospective ,
Hope the 5 kg includes the box or i will have to carry them round empty
