Bike Cam - which one?

I got a call from the dealer today saying my GS should arrive later this week :bounce1

I've got a few extras to put on but was also thinking about putting a bike cam on it of some description. I don't intend using it for anything other than evidence gathering in case things go tits up and want to mount it on the bike if possible so I can power it off the bike so I know it's always recording when the ignition is on, rather than have a helmet cam.

I was thinking along the lines of one of the bullet shaped Road Hawk Ride ones- either the normal or + model, so has anyone tried them and if so are they any good. If anyone's got any others they use that use any feedback would be appreciated.

Same (or better) specs as a go pro, same mounts (so you can use any aftermarket go pro designed mount) and around 40 quid for a 'real' one on e-bay :thumb2
In the instructions, it tells you how to wire it and set it up so it starts recording on a loop (of any length up to the capacity of the card) when given a live feed from the ignition :)

Interesting i had a sj4000 and to be honest it was not as good as my drift hero. pic was grainy and because of the wide fish eye lens distances seemed wrong. it packed up 6 months later. maybe i was unlucky but in my experience, drift or go pro is the way to go.
 
Having these square camera mounts stuck on your helmet ,
Obviously it effects the aerodynamics of the helmet, but is it not putting strain on your neck and shoulders ?

My SJ4000 broke on 1st day so got a refund eventually. Could have been an eBay copy though.

Happy with my GoPros.
 
Do you need to worry about it being hidden or are you happy to remove it when you stop? The helmet cam will capture much more than the fixed bike cam if your after insurance footage. I use a drift HD ghost every day. Lasts about 3 hours but you can carry other batteries, or if its not helmet mounted you can charge it. Brackets are quick release.

I also just got a drift stealth 2 as a day to day camera for riding to work (in the friday sale) its actually very compact and the footage is just as good as the Ghost. Was £99 and id definitely recommend it! but you cannot change battery or plug in a mic.



 
Sorry to butt in but I have the Drift Ghost and it did everything I needed out of the box BUT ! I have now caught the bug and want another cam to get different angles while riding, question is....crotchrocket, how long does the Stealth 2 battery last ?, working them both off the same remote is ideal although the fixed battery is a bit of a drawback.

looking good !! :thumb The drift stealth lasts about 3 hours also! you could plug it in if you're gonna mount it on the bike? Just not really able to do it in the rain as the rear waterproof cover has to come off to expose the terminals.

I rode around ireland a couple of years ago and ran a usb cable up through my jacket liner to the helmet and just used the video tagging mode to record interesting things. That way the camera was constantly rolling all day.

just purchased a drift stealth2 from ebay for £95 delivered. I am sure I looked at these before and they did not support DVR mode but it appears they do!
 
I got a Drift Ghost and used it on a tour of the Alps this September. I used RAM mounts off the top right crash bar and it worked brilliantly using the remote on my right arm for video and stills, simultaneously. I kept it powered up all the time and (by finding out the hard way) I also kept my remote charged while riding every second day, at least. The only drawback, for any fixed camera, was if there was a view to my left I couldn't get it because it was fixed on the right. I'm thinking about using a second one for next year powering them both from the remote (and mounting it somewhere else).
 
Used a sony on my mts. Fixed on a bracket on side of bike. Got some good results. No thanks to helmet cams at my speeds.
 
Yes Jacal, I too think it's brilliant! I haven't used the video tagging but I used the remote control videoing all the time so I could film some routes and also all the road signs at junctions as, I'm sure you know, if you end up doing quite a few passes in one day they all tend to blend into one! I also took stills of the junction signs while videoing it - I really like that facility. My question now is what spec. of Drift should I get for my second camera?
 
Hi Khulu, the info crotchrocket gave, swung it for me. I have the Ghost HD for my main camera and will use the Stealth as second camera which I can move all over the bike to shoot the same footage at a different angle. I have a Zoom H1 on my Christmas list which will hopefully take care of the sound recording.
