I never usually bother locking my bike at work, but since I got the GS I thought I had better start. And the first time I attached it to the bike I thought I'm going to forget its there one day.

That day came yesterday. Started bike up (watched by 6 smokers standing around), clutch in, in gear, clutch out and bit of throtttle, wtf??? - I barely moved 6 inches and the bike stopped solid and rolled over onto its right side. I managed to stay on my feet and let it drop.

Some bloke came running over "I've never seen that before"! He helped me pick her back up and luckily, there are no scratches. The bike appears to have rested on the bars and pillion footrest. Phew! Very embarrassing! :blush

Nice one. Welcome to the Club :)
I did that on my Honda VF1000F2 in 1989 too. Nobody saw me, but the embarrassment sits to this day.
I use disc lock only on my KTM nowadays, but this nifty device has caught my attention:

Edit: It's not approved by Scandinavian insurance companies, but can be used as additional lock.

I find a big hefty bike chain run through the centre of the rear hub is the only safe option for me. That way when I try to ride off with the chain still attached (which happens all too regularly) I just have to face the embarrassment not the damage.

I would never risk a disk lock because I just know I would end up breaking something.

Yep, done that!! No damage to the bike as has crash bars, but a dent to the ego. I felt such a twat as there was an audience.:augie:D

Yes I justed switched from a big U lock to a disc lock - I'm afraid of doing exactly that so I bought one of the yellow cords you put on the clutch to remind you that it is on.

Memories eh ! Happened to me also. U lock front wheel 1100LT, on its side outside main gate to Dachau Concentration camp :hide

been there, done it and in front of about 100 bikers at a bike show! oh if the ground could have opened up!!!

I always use a hi-vis stretchy cord from the disc-lock over my right handle bar and hock it on to my front brake lever. never done it again since...

Ha! I left the lock on my moped when I was a kid, was trying to be clever and show off to a girl and ended up on my arse :D

Whoops

Done that myself :(

feel stupid dont yer and there wasnt anyone watching me

Only fit mine now after the big yellow cord is on the throttle :thumb2
hopefully WDTA

you are not alone :thumb2

disc locks

Did exactly the same on my 6 month old 748, ~~snapped brake caliper lugs clean off!!!
had to ride home with a gold brembo caliper tied around inside fairing, only using back brake.
could not claim on warranty, don't know why!

I am sure most of us has done it or have come close. I always switch off the power button and try to use a bright coloured cord when using a Disc Lock. Either way you think before starting the engine.

My disc lock has it's own little bag, I put my keys in the bag and then into my pocket.

I feel a bit better now! Yes, I also have the yellow cord - its in my garage :nenau:D

You win :clap:D:D

Yup been there done that on my old CBF1000. Big heavy beast that I went down with. Also cost me a new disc as I managed to warp the original when the lock clanged into the caliper :tears

Yep add one more to the list of shame ... supermarket car park
on my old single F650, bloke in the car parked in front of me
couldn't stop laughing (once he'd checked I was alright).

I'll put my hands up to that as well. I think it was a 1995 vintage Suzuki Bandit. Took it around to my mates house who lived with another biker.

Set off with everybody watching - a few revs for a racing start. Surprising how quick you're deposited on the ground :) Cost: New speedo gearbox + 1 massive ego.

Yep! Parked up the other day, nothing to attach my lock and chain to so I just looped it through the front wheel and over the mud guard.

Got back and was distracted by another F800GS parked next to me, so just put my gloves and helmet on and rode off, for about 20cm, followed by a loud bang as the front mud guard cracked. This was in a busy shopping street outside a cafe and near a bus stop so plenty of observers.

Obviously it wasn't my fault as it wouldn't have happened if the other GS hadn't parked next to me :blast:augie
