Filled up at asda self service in Leicester. Bike did about 20 miles and coughed a few times then died. Started and ran for 30 secs and died again.

Seems like fuel starvation to me .Phoned asda but they have no other occurences yet.

I might be totally wrong but I think its bad petrol. I hope im right :nenau

Mine died withing 1/2 a mile of filling up. i drained the tank and put fresh fuel in with no joy, it turned out to be a broken wire in the ignition loom. if you think about it whenever a bike dies its never that long after filling up.

Is it possible you've put diesel in? :blast
Was it smoking before it died?:smokeboun
With the knock sensors on the bike, it should be able to run on pretty low grade petrol and so a bad batch of fuel shouldn't effect it too badly.

Having said that, it may be the start of another silicone contaminated fuel saga with supermarket petrol stations!!

Errr... you didn't put diesel in by mistake, did you?

No ,dipped my finger in the tank and smelt petrol.Anyway i would have had a great smoke screen behind me for the last mile .

Maybe .As i said bike started once it had been on the sidestand and then died. After that wouldnt start at all .

Ironic(lucky) thing was I rolled to a stop right outside a motorcycler repair shop.

It ran for 20-30 minutes after filling up and you blame the new fuel? I don't think so.

If it was the fuel, it would have been coughing and farting within a minute or two.

i'm thinking fuel pump energiser thingy on top of tank.

Left hand Side cover , the the Cover on top of the Tank.
Fuel pump relay. This is probably filled with water.
The terminals are coroded , and it will cost you £80GBP at your
Local friendly BMW dealer.

Is there a recommended procedure to head off this kind of failure?

I.E. Taking it apart regularly and sopping up the water, leaving grease/wax behind? (Haven't been in there yet, but don't ride it in the rain, unless touring..)

Considering the weakness, I'd have liked it if BMW had redesigned the cover for it and made them available to buy...

Every 6 months or so I remove the fuel pump doodah and smear vaseline around where the rubber seal goes - same for the rubber seals on the electrical connector blocks. After washing it (also every 6 months or so  ) I soak up any water left in the area.

The photo posted by Civil above shows the older version of the contoller. The newer one has the cooling fins set an angle. This probably isn't the only difference.

Just been to have a look and there doesn't seem to be any corrosion on the relay. When i turn the key i couldn't hear the fuel pump kick in .Am i meant to ??

tried to start it and it did fire a few times and died .

looks like i better get down to the dealers ??

Well i just got the bike home and hey presto ,scorch marks on the fuel pump thingy when i took the rubber sealant off.

Sorry Asda ,you sell great petrol and all is forgiven. Now I have to see if i can claim it on a lapsed warranty:bow
