Bike died 20 miles after filling up with petrol

Is there a recommended procedure to head off this kind of failure?

I.E. Taking it apart regularly and sopping up the water, leaving grease/wax behind? (Haven't been in there yet, but don't ride it in the rain, unless touring..)

Considering the weakness, I'd have liked it if BMW had redesigned the cover for it and made them available to buy...

Al...

I think they have modified this, i rode a new 1200 GS on the BMW off-road course and I noticed this area now has a plastic cap type cover over it, I'm going to make enquiries as my 2006 12000GSA does not have this mod.

Looks like they are at least trying to resolve the issue at last...

Even the early 12GS's had it, the GS Adv doesn't - I don't think there is room with the larger tank. Oh and the cover didn't keep water out.

Left hand Side cover , the the Cover on top of the Tank.
Fuel pump relay. This is probably filled with water.
The terminals are coroded , and it will cost you £80GBP at your
Local friendly BMW dealer.

I paid Mr Charles Hurst £80 GBP,s and they said , i hadnt any hope of
a "Good Faith" Claim as my warranty was out of date.
The Shop themselves then gave me a Wee Deal , on another item.
I can only assume they were sorta sayin ""there ye Go"" sorta thing ?.
Either that or they like me !.

I dont believe its a big enough issue to have to Carry one tho
I quite enjoyed my repeated breakdowns in Spain.
I had a whale of a Time in Madrid , the Red light, Gay ,and general
""Alternative"" sexual orientation,s ,Districts provided me , and i have to
say Billie with a Brilliant few Nights craic !. We Both enjoyed the
atmosphere and Carefree Difference.

Well phoned a certain Yorkshire dealer whom I purchased the bike from and explained my problem . 8 months out of warranty etc!!

Cost me nada .buck shee .

Brill.

Mind you it shouldn't have failed in the first place :augie

Every 6 months or so I remove the fuel pump doodah and smear vaseline around where the rubber seal goes - same for the rubber seals on the electrical connector blocks. After washing it (also every 6 months or so  ) I soak up any water left in the area.

Vaseline will rot rubber, use silicone grease instead :thumb .

I was talking to a guy today whilst I was out riding, he owns the new R1200S
and had to have it transported to a dealer in Sydney to have the crankshaft
sensor replaced, it just stopped for no reason and would'nt go again

Regards Kerry

super market petrol

Not sure what the symptoms are but I know some super markets have sold crap petrol recently. There is still some of this in circulation so check with that garage if they have had any other problems...... How one would rectify that if it is the issue I have no idea.......
good luck
