Bike doesn't start after winter rest - help needed

The sound you hear is that of the solenoid swicthing power to the starter, the voltage dropping, the solenoid switching off and the cycle repeating. the reason it repeats is that there is enough current to operate the solenoid but not to turn the starter motor. now 11 volts whilst the starter is in operation is quite good in my experience, which suggests to me that the problem is bad contacts giiving high resistance in the circuit. battery might or might not be OK but all the contacts / terminals need cleaning too.

Hi,
I have not been able to read here during the last days. Picked up a new battery today and delivered in the old one. Therefore I have not done any further test.
However, fitted the new battery and could then enjoy the beautiful noise that I was waiting for all winter.

Thanks al lot for all help I received here and my apologizes to those I may have annoyed with an issue that has been on the agenda before. Based on the symptoms I did not suspect the battery in the first place.

Best wishes for a great and safe season

Regards from Norway

same for me

after a winter lay-up, i has the same thing with my R12Adv.

Being nervous about trying to jump start the bike (manual warns against it), i took it out and charged it up for an hour or so, and it's been as good as gold since. :)

The clicking noise gave me a bit of a fright, though!

Patrick.

I have had similar problems. I had warranty left, but the BMW batteries will only leave you high and dry next time, so I bought a Odyssey battery, which is much stronger. If my bike doesn't start I miss my train and have to leave the bike all day, so BMW were called out 3 times 3 days in a row before I finally gave up and bought my own battery. The recovery people wouldn't recover it, and it wouldn't hold a charge long enough for me to get back home after work. I was in a catch 22. The other thing was that there was a faulty contact somewhere which was preventing it even starting with jump leads. The BMW recovery people fixed that the second time round I think.

I don't find it starts very well in sub-zero temperatures. It could be my oil being a bit thick, as it turns over, and fires, but doesn't catch.

I have been told that AGM batteries do not recover well from being totally discharged compared to Lead/Acid.....:nenau
