Went to start the R1200GS today after winter layup, battery fully charged, on pressing the start button I only get a clunk noise, starter motor does try to run.

Any ideas, I'm going to check the starter relay (when I can find it) any other pointers greatly appreciated

Knackered battery..:nenau

Just because the battery shows fully charged doesn’t necessarily mean the battery is good.

Stick a voltmeter across the battery terminals when you press the start button. I sharp drop in voltage indicates a poor battery. If you have access to another battery, then strap that across the battery terminals as you press the start button.

might as well put in 6th gear and either push or on centre stand try and see if the engine will turn over a bit...

it that proves OK - its highly likely the odd electrical system on modern bikes is arguing the battery hasn't got enough grunt. I don't understand how it works - but its like that on all my BMWs and the KTM is the same - loads of grunt - but less than the system magically knows it wants before you even use the starter button

why am I not allowed a slow crank - then I'll know why its being difficult - or is that the game !!!

persevered out of stubbornness for years on all three - but a new battery fixed all of them every time

thanks all for the replies, I have checked the alternator and that turns freely, the starter relay appears to be working and the solenoid on the starter is clicking in and out (which is the clunking noise), I have put a secondary feed to the starter motor and solenoid and it turns just but it was a smaller battery, I and there thinking it is the battery even though it was new last year. going to try and jump it from the car ( if I can get to the car battery as they seem burried)

How goes it

Hi,
did you get the starting problem fixed?
I am just wondering about fitting a Hicap starting upgrade kit from Motoworks. My stupid question is which is the positive terminal on the solenoid? or are they both as the mounting is the earth?

Thanks

Dave
