Hi

This is a question for my idle interest.

I see lots of photos of various GS bikes resting on their sides as people stand around watching. I even see people laying them down on purpose, e.g to practice picking them back up.

I have had previous bikes knocked on their side a couple of times and they generally start immediately leaking fluids / tripping cut-off switches on the fuel injectors and so on. I need to get them upright as soon as possible and even then they can be a pain to get started.

Are GS bikes designed to rest happily on their sides?

cheers
Darren

Yeah, better get used to it :D

I worked out the other day that I've been riding bikes since I was 16 in 1979 and the last time I dropped a bike while manoeuvring it was in 1987 (Moto Martin Z1000). However, I've had my GS1150 for about 18 months now and dropped it 4 times already! All whilst manoeuvring. A combination of being a short arse and having a tall, heavy bike :comfort

the GS by its very nature is lazy and like the odd power nap every now and then:augie

My 1200 went over all by itself when the side stand folded up (twice this happened) thing is it diod not do any harm - impressed.

I must be a past mistress at dropping/laying down my GS......now i just laugh.

The reason being, all my previous bikes (not BMW) if they went over, then it was a panic scramble to lift them up again.

I went on the BMW off road course in Sept and they MAKE you lay your bike down so you know how to pick it up correctly. It made my bike seem quite natural for it to be on its side....so now, i laugh look at it and then pick it up with no panic.

on it's side..ouch!

Funny you starting his thread today....after having a new set of TKC's fitted yesterday, I decided to go have 'a play' offroad locally on my own....mistake:blast

Found myself at the bottom of an extremely wet, muddy and very narrow track with nowhere to go.:eek

Not enough room to manouver around or turn around and too steep to back up....so....laid it down and hauled it around the right way:thumb2 but it was just too slippery for me to get it upright again:augie

Wrenched my back and ended up knackered. Luckily a bloke was out running and gave me hand to get it upright again:bow

Off I went absolutely blathered in muck:clap to my local tesco's on the way home....trailed mud all thru the store and got a few 'looks'.

Just finished hosing bike/boots/overtrousers etc ready for tomorrows commute and taken a few xtra strength pills to ease me back....ouch.

Always been able to pick it up before but just too slippy today. I coulda been fecked if he hadn't come along..so moral of the story..don't go playing on yer own:blagblah

They like to lie down, thats what they are for:

I do not know what the oem BMW bars are for though, because the bars do not touch the ground.

Lay it down and practice picking it up :D

Picking it up

Tried the 'hack squat' technique the other day there when I binned the bike. Face away from the bike, squat down, grab the bars with one hand, the frame with the other and lift. Worked a treat.

An even better timed drop....what luck that he managed to fall off just when precisely over that convenient pile of rags :D

Nah, he'd just had a strop with the missus and ridden in anger through the washing line, then due to revenge-satiated-laughter let the bike drop and run off to the pub while the missus grieves/screams/goes into nuclear meltdown about the clean washing :D :D

And she can't pick it up

Almost expecting The Stump to do a barrel roll through that pic ! :D:D:D:D:D But didnt think he was intae muffs :eek

I've found that sometimes you do get a little fluid leakage as you strain to lift it back up.

Generally around the groin/upper thigh area...:augie
