Hello all,

Ok GS 1150 A was running a little rough so off to the local Melbourne dealer for a tune. "Hmm Mr Thomas, looks like the ign pickup sensor is faulty" so ok fit a new one I said ( $700 inc labour.. ouch ) so I call to see about collecting... " hmm Mr Thomas it looks like we have fitted a sensor that has an issue ( bike will not run ) and we will source a new sensor for you so it will be with us for another day" OK I said.. I call the next day to get status and they tell me it will still not run..

Hmm a day later on and they tell me they have checked all sensors and all are working fine but bike will still not run. ( no spark ) so I say what options do I have. Well BMW suggest fitting a new loom... Me not happy and to add more insult BMW $&(**()^%^ then charged me for the joy..

So bike dropped off due to poor idle but RUNNING and collected not running and with a cost of some $220... Me not happy camper. After jumping up and down they tell me if no pay then no bike... I paid the bill.

So back to the drawing board. BMW want stupid money for a loom. I have had a look at all connections and all look OK. No areas that I can see but I cant think of any other point to start.

Bike turns over fine, both plugs out and no spark. I have found the kill wire and disconected it and still no joy.

Any one got any ideas?

I was going to take it to another dealer as the Bast%rds at SOUTHBANK BMW here in Melbourne are not worth the steam off my ....

Are there any basic checks apart from general condition of the loom were I should start to look.

Are there any wires I can jump to turn the bike over with IGN on to bypass and issue with Ign key perhaps?

Well see how I go here.
Will make contact with some breakers to see re loom options.

Hope all is well in the UK. I miss it in a funny way.

My next step would be to by-pass the side-stand cut-out.

Just a process of elimination.

Assuming that the work that the BWM dealer did was ok and the sensors as the bike was running beforehand it is logical to assume that the problem lies between the replaced sensor and the spark plug. Since it is ulikely both plugs will fail at the same time you should start from the sensor end.
Check all those connections and wires between those two points.
Various multi testers from car accessory shops will tell you if power can run through them.
If that fails "borrow" a mates bike (that is running) and swop over any components you can onto his bike. If his bike runs you then know that that component is ok and the problem lies elsewhere
There is a motronic relay in the fuse box which may be a good place to start.
This site has a schematic of the loom. (it is very slow to load)
http://www.bmwgsclub.nl/schematics/R1150GS schematic.pdf
It mentions an antitheft system on pages 29 and 30. I do not know what it refers to though as the schematic does not mention a separate unit.
If you cannot be arsed to do this just get a mobile autoelectrician in and let him do the detective work. He will also be able to bypass any failed loom wires very easily.
Good luck
Paul

are the injectors firing, bike on centre stand select a gear with ignition/kill switch on then slowly rotate tyre when the pick up passes the hall sensors the injectors should fire if so then you know from the hall sensors on the front engine plate to the ECU and injectors is okay, one less thing to look for.

What about a fractured wire at the headstock? According to Steptoe, the tie wraps can cause the loom to fracture a wire after some time?

Casey, the bike wont run because it thinks its still in the UK, but upside down.
All the petrol will be in the top of the tank and not reaching the pickup.
You will have to reset the tiptronic memory by the usual method of switching the ignition on and opening the throttle fully 5 times.
Glad to be of assistance.

:jes What took you so long Den? :D

Yer wanna kick the tyres and rub yer chin a bit harder

Works for me :thumb2

How yer doin matey?

Or you could either drown it, chuck it down the road, or throw it off a cliff. Or maybe it's only 1200's that work after that kind of abuse.......... :D

Hope you're well mate.

There is a connector under the right hand side cover below the tank. It is a block connector and on mine has a couple of tight bends. When raising the tank on one occasion, I found the bike wouldn't start. Re-connecting this and the bike was running fine again. Hope this helps.

Thanks Fellas

All still nogo.

I will when I have more time check the loom top to end and see if anywires not good.
Fingers crossed. All basic checks work such as bike on cent stand and in gear, turn wheel, fuel pump on and off.

Next bypass a few wires and see how I go. Could always insure up to the hilt and burn....
