Hi all

Just a quick one, hopefully!!!!
Have been using my 850 GS over the last few weeks no problem.
Went to start it this morning ...but no joy

Lights are working and when I press the start...it seems to be using the starting motor (Revs going up...panel lights flicking...bit of noise) but not starting the engine.

If anyones got an idea whats wrong would be gratefull.....

You're going to hate this. Is the Kill Switch on? I think it turns over without starting in that situation (been a while since I did it...)

Norman

Hi Norman

You know i had to double check to be on the safe side (hoping I had made a wee mistake...)

the noise is like a machine gun..with nothing happening

When I put on the kill then back on to normal, I can hear the servo kicking it...same with the side stand

Shame ....but thks anyhow (bloody fast replay!!)

Check you're not trying to start it in gear with the sidestand down.

'It appears to be using the starter motor' - not sure what this means - is it turning the engine over or not? If not, it may be as simple as a flat battery...

Battery, probably - a lack of electrical oomph, anyway - when did you last start it?

Mike:)

ps Take all the load off the battery (turn your lights, heated grips etc off), then try again...

Hi Mike

With the side stand down or the kill switch on....nothing happens when I press the starter (no noise or flickering of panel switches)

with the normal setting and out of gear...when I press the starter button...the lights start to flicker...and a machine gun noise comes from the lower left hand side of engine (Not sure if starter motor----this is what i thought was the starter moter..but not sure)

I use the bike every day...except yesterday ...there is no load on the battery (lights off and no heated hand grips) and when I do put on lights the power looks good...

thanks again

p.s

Added....

it does not appear to be turing the engine

Aint seen ya!!

Thanks..will take out battery later and make sure its fully charged..and see what happens....:hammer

OK.. somebody tell me if it's a bad idea but I'd try this... sit on the bike, side stand up, slot it into gear, turn on, gingerly hit starter... the bike should lurch forward, i.e. it is turning the motor over... therefore it's not the starter motor that's your problem... once you know that you can move on to the next stage... WTF isn't it starting then??? You've got spark & fuel to contend with... tell us how you get on.

The machine gun effect exactly describes the symptoms when my battery went west. It means the starter definitely isn't turning, so Hedgehog's plan wouldn't achieve much, I'm afraid. I'd suggest putting the bike in gear and rocking it backwards & forwards a few times, in case the solenoid is sticking, then trying starting it as normal again.

Otherwise I'd get the battery checked...

Had the same problems a couple of months back on a mates 1100GS. The starter motor is not fully engaging, possibly due to a weak battery and possibly due to the 'bendix' mechanism being partially seized. Remove starter motor, connect it to a 12v battery and spray plenty of WD40 on the output shaft while operating it. Put it all back together, charge your battery and it'll start.
If you're not comfortable doing all that, bump start it, ride it to my house (Douglas) and I'll fix it for you.

Except to determine whether the starter motor's engaging/working/turning.

Hi All

Thanks for all your help so far

Hedgehog..Did what you said and nothing happened (And i was very carefull!!)

I have been out looking for a new BMW battery or optimate to charge up the old one....No joy

So am using a 1960 charger for a Car to see what happens..Jesus removing the battery was a bit of a pain..nothing like sticking it in the middle...!!

So am charging at the moment ... if this fails will order new batt....and if that fails will have a chat with the local man Ferg!!

thanks

Hi again

Just a wee update on my bike

Left it charging on a car charger (8 amp charger) at fast rate for approx 2 hours....stuck it back were it should belong...put everthing together, and

It worked...was only the bleeding battery it were.....

So big thanks to all (I never thought it would be the battery as the lights were fine...but then dont know much about these things..!!)

And will get a OptiMate and hope this does not happen again..

Ferg, give us your mobile number and I will give you a call next week after nights for a pint or 2!!
Thanks again

you could have charged the battery without taking it out of the bike - put the battery charger pos lead onto the starter motor main lead, and the battery earth lead to a footrest or other earth

Dan

My mobile number is 086-8128943. By the way, you can buy an optimate in Lee Motorcycles (Parnell Place, Cork) or in Southern Racing Motorcycles, Midleton. About €55 to €60 last time I saw them.
