Hi
I was waiting in line for the Plymouth/Santander ferry went to restart the bike and the display came up with EWS and wouldn't crank over
Tried it a couple of times eventually it started and got it onto the ferry.
Not sure if it will restart when we get off.
I have the plastic key with me but cannot seen to find out what it does
Any help gratefully received!
Bike is a 2005

If your lucky it could just be a low Battery

Probably a bit late now for you, but for future reference a couple of us carry a Noco battery booster when travelling with a group. Saved us on more that one occasion.

the ring antenna around the switch dies - last time talking to my BMW dealer about it - again falling on the floor laughing -"never sold one of those - ha ha" - £45 quid

2005 -

Chances are it's a broken wire(s) in the headstock of the loom

do a search on here for how to test / diagnose & fix

If you have the BMW alarm it could be that the two small 3V lithium batteries inside it need replacing, I recall them being CR123A or something like that. I believe the alarm talks to the immobiliser via the ZFE and BMS-K units over Canbus.

Thinking about it, I'm probably talking shit (as usual) as the factory alarm brings up "DWA" when faulty, not "EWS".

You can check your ring antenna at the headstock is the latest (reliable) version, there were several attempts to get the part right as early ones were prone to failure, the part number embossed on it should end in 247.
