GS 2004 when turning the key the engine stops and the lights go out but three seconds later the parking lights and the dash are back on, even when pulling the keys out. Had to fiddle a bit to solve it last week but had to disconnect the battery three times now and it seems to get worse. Sometimes the engine does not stop at all.

Is this just water in the key hole or a big job ?
Bike is outdoors a lot and in daly use

PS It's not in the parking light and full lock position... Just thinking of the first smart comments .

It's likely the lock is worn. Carrying additional keys hanging off the ignition key will accelerate lock damage
You can take off the ignition switch front cover to examine the connectors. But to remove the switch you need to remove the headstock and drill off the security bolt heads.

Iv seen cars not turn off more to do with carbon build up on Pistons causing it to carry on quite funny to watch, but as bendy said it'll be worn ign & or water ingress too.

can't go wrong with trying a few good blasts of wd40 down the lock and then give the key a good few wazzes around. fixed the problem with mine it wasn't the same problem though as mine wouldn't turn on (prob. dirty contacts). it's a cheap and cheerful attempt at a fix :nenau

Thanks to all of you. Just done a WD 40 blast again this morning at work ... because the issue seems to be permanent now.

I did manage to stop the engine and the ignition but will have to open the thing and clean as much as possible as bendy mentioned. fingers crossed

To the carbon guys ......fair play to the idea, but its is definitely a electric problem.

I never said "yours" was a carbon issue just something I'd seen happen on a friends motor,it used to judder about for upto a min if not stalled lol was fun :D

Id say your problem must be water ingress or contacts broken, poss touching all the time inside as bendy said, top yoak off drill out safety screws then a new or 2nd hand item :)

Will chase images before i start opening the thing ... a bit of prep work will give me a boost of confidence to have a look at it myself.

Thanks guys

Careful when removing the ring antenie that's what trasmits to the ecu from key chip, should be straightforward Id just buy the part & replace most likely worn or broken inside,it might not be repairable like so many things are today

Oh, how can you ride the bike with spare keys, fobs, etc thrashing about in the lock? Only ever going to damage something isn't it .

Agree 100%. My ign key is on a small carabena to easily unclip it from the main bunch of keys.

But some people do what many do with car keys - have a load of shrapnel dangling of the key.

OP may not do it but previous owners(?) etc etc.

Jeez guys, you'll get half the 1200 section panicking about what they have on their key rings and lets hope the WC boys don't see this. They will have a fucking meltdown!!

OP, ignitions will wear out and it really doesn't matter a toss what's on the key ring. It may be the switch is u/s and it's a fairly easy fix.

I've separated the ignition key from the bunch on every bike I've owned. It just seems brutal to rattle the weight of all my keys against my very expensive ignition lock. The old Hondas with ignition down by the bottom steering yoke were especially vulnerable.

I've done the same with some cars depending if the rattling keys annoy me.

A friend and I squirted refrigerator liquid into the lock with a surynge tonight
This dissolved grease and shit and is obviously fast vapouating! Each time I stuck the key in and fiddled arond and pulled the key out to clean it again . After a few times the lock started to do its old job again and works perfect now !!!! For how long ??? Fingers crossed ⚠️ To me it looks like a success because you can feel the lock again

Thanks a million to my Cork friend

Bah 5 stops later same thing again .. this will set me back a few dollars I guess

I wonder if it's not the keyed part of the switch that is the problem, it could be the switch on the lower end of the ignition barrel, it sounds similar to the problem I had on mine but the other way round, i.e, mine would sometimes not turn on until I'd turned it on and off quite a few times gradually getting worse,
It's a common fault it seems and after buying a new switch (around 80 quid ) I never had another problem.

I'm sure if it can stick in the off position it could also stick in the on position, though you do say the engine turns off so I might be talking bollocks,
