I'm sure this has been covered before, probably numerous times but....
I recently signed up to the local Biker Down course run by Herts Fire & rescue. It was an excellent morning, full of practical information that you might need in the event of having or coming upon a bike accident. Some stuff was common sense, a lot more wasn't. It was split into three sessions. 1. How to manage an incident. 2. How to deal with an injured rider (not a first aid course but some basic, potentially lifesaving stuff) & 3. How to minimise having an accident to start with.
I would thoroughly encourage everyone out there who's got a Saturday morning spare to do one of these if possible. I believe that a majority of fire departments around the country do it, it's totally FREE and you'll get a basic first aid kit thrown in for your troubles.
