Can anyone help? Planning a trip to the Black Forest (yes I know it's in Germany) looking for decent places to stay in and around reims and Strasbourg, preferably with secure parking. I have looked at the "commercial" ones, but was hoping for some recommendations.

Try the viaMichelin website. it lists just about every hotel you will need, along with information as to whether the hotel has a garage. Pick one, try it. After all, that is how most folk found the hotels they like in the first place. Also, have a read through some of the trip reports to see if anything catches your eye.

'Biker friendly' is a concept that does not exist in France (or even in the UK), patrons like customers whether they came on a motorcycle, horse, car or walked in the door. Behave like a yob and they will treat you like a yob..... see 'The Grey One's' thread if you have any doubt that 'bikers' never behave like boorish yobs.

We stopped in the Ibis Strasbourg Centre Petite France last July on the way to the Alps and it was cheap, clean and had a secure courtyard car park where you can safely park your bike.

It was right next to the old town, which was very pretty, particularly the facade of the cathedral. Plenty of restaurants and bars to select from too :thumb2

We rode the Routes Des Cretes in the Vosges mountains the next day which I would recommend - better than the B500 in the Black Forest IMHO.

That 2 wheel moorings looks fantastic and the village gorgeous. I'll be making that a stop on my return from the Monaco grand Prix in May/April.

Lovely part of the world is that. Lucky bleeders.

In Reims city centre, only the modern hotels will have underground parking. Most of the interesting "boutique" hotels require you to park in a nearby public car park (there's a massive one under Place Drouet d'Erlon).

These hotels have their own car park, all underground:

I've used the Mercure & the Quality Inn (they are next to one another and the HIExpress is nearby). Both had very good deals on at the time.

All are close to the cathedral and the shopping centre. If you are staying in the city centre avoid the tourist trap that is Place Drouet d'Erlon where you will find the chain restaurants. Go to Place de la Forum and pick one of the nicer restaurants there, run by independents. Edgar's Bistrot is very good. If you are lucky, your visit will coincide with some open air theatre. I had a superb bottle of Pomerol with a delicious steak, at a reasonable price of about 45 euros per person for 2 courses & the wine.

The Sejours is an oddity, mostly used by SNCF staff from the Gare next door. Rooms have self catering facilities. Location is excellent, close to the centre and it has underground parking. I've used it for an overnight stop when travelling alone, didn't fancy dining out alone so went to the nearby Champion supermarket and bought some steak, bread & cidre (too tight for champagne!).

The cheaper hotels are miles out of town and you really need to be in town. I love the place and it is just the right distance for an overnight stop for me on the last night of a trip to the lumpy bits.

'Biker freindly' is a pretty unknown concept in France - everyone seems to love bikers. Go to smaller hotels (non-chain) and they'll usually go out of their way to help you.

I've had hoteliers go to extraordinary lengths to get my bike to a secure and convenient parking place.

Good tips (as always) from Wessie and Stolzy :thumb2

I, like Stolzy, have found hoteliers, restaurant owners and even parking wardens / municipal police more than accommodating to motorcyclists. Don't take the piss with them and (more often than not) they will be very helpful.

Of course it's a problem if 20 blokes on bikes suddenly turn up at a hotel or restaurant demanding fodder or a bunch of rooms; that they came on a motorbike makes no difference. Of course it's a problem if the same 20 blokes shout out their meal orders in English all at once, simply as the poor waitress doesn't understand.... if in doubt, get twenty French blokes to shout at you :D... but that does not mean that they dislike everyone who happens to ride a motorcycle.

Have a bit of fun with our Gallic neighbours by all means. But they are, by and large, a polite crew so a bit of simple courtesy never goes amiss.

I always stay here whenever possible...

It's about 20 miles NW of Strasbourg, just at the north end of The Vosges.
It's owned and run by a biker and his son, he's got a wicked (dry) sense of humour and the food is out of this world.
OK, it's not as cheap as a Formula 1, or whatever, but it's still worth every penny.
If you have dinner, go for the BBQ on the table... you'll not regret it :thumb2

Oh... and it has very secure parking as well.

Thanks to all who have replied. I will have a look and let you know how I get on. Cheers

For a nice place to stay in Reims have a look at www.telliers.fr
Les Telliers is a very nice Bed and Breakfast situated a couple of streets back from the main street where all the Cafe's and Bars are. There is a garage which must be reserved as it's only for one car or two to three bikes. We stayed there year before last and found it to be excellent.

Have stayed there twice, once last week. Very clean & tidy, honesty bar, lovely location overlooking the river, very good price & a nice little restaurant a short walk away. Run by Ian & Carol. Recommended.
