Just a heads up - Thames Valley Police will be offering a Bikesafe course starting this April. I work for TVP and am taking part in a training validation day in March, as a trial run for paying clients - one day's training will cost £50 when the course is up and running.

Direct info from my Joining Instructions;

The course is held at Taplow Roads Policing base. It will conclude at H Cafe in Berinsfield, Oxford

We have a team of more than 20 trained assessors who are all Roads Policing officers, they have completed both advanced car and bike courses. In addition to riding at work all are passionate motorcyclists.

Course format

0830 – arrival, administration and a chance to meet your assessor

0900 – interactive presentation delivered by Grant Goodings or Conrad Lee who are bike instructors from our driving school. This will cover topics including hazard awareness, cornering, overtaking, junctions, group riding and filtering.

1200 – lunch, which is provided.

1230 – First Bike on Scene presented by South Central Ambulance bike paramedics. Would you know what to do if you came across a collision? This will offer you the skill you will hopefully never need.

1330 – A ride with your assessor. This is designed to take in most of the types of road you are likely to ride on urban, rural, sweeping and twisty. The maximum ratio will be two riders to one assessor. You will stop on regular occasions to debrief your ride and reflect on the classroom input before putting the advice into practice.

1530 – Arrival at a common location with the rest of the group where your assessor will provide you with feedback. Grant or Conrad will be on hand if any new questions have cropped up as will representatives from advanced training organisations to allow you to take the next step.

Thames Valley weren't doing Bikesafe last year, but I went on a course organised by a group they recommended called, Be A Better Biker, which was good. The running commentary down the lugole took some getting used to, but it was very useful having that level of information during a ride. I learnt some interesting points about my riding.

There was a policeman at the start, when we did a classroom session, and he seemed there mainly to speak out in support of hi-viz for bikers, he was introduced to us, although I don't recall his name, he arrived on a police bike. Perhaps he is one of the trainers for this new, and welcome, Bikesafe scheme.

Need any non TVP volunteers for the validation day?

The course costs £75 per person - looks like it's creeping up...

And WHY do you need to bring along all this paperwork - don't they have ANPR & the connected DBs? :nenau
